Explore Cartagena through its beaches, wetland landscape and cultural sites. When planning, it is particularly helpful to understand the difference between Playa Grande and Playa Chica: one beach is defined by its size and role as an access point to the Humedal de Cartagena, while the other is known for its history as a seaside resort and gentle waves. The promenade, staircase and railway station add points of reference within the city to this coastal perspective.

Beaches and Wetland

Playa Grande lies in northern Cartagena and covers about 12 hectares. The beach is suitable for swimming and is the main access point to the Humedal de Cartagena. If you are taking the coastal area and wetland into account in your plans, this access point is a useful landmark. Access routes may change, so check the current route before your visit.

Playa Chica is one of the first seaside resorts in central Chile. The beach has gentle waves and is also suitable for swimming. This means the two beaches have distinct features: Playa Grande is characterized by its approximate area and access to the wetland, while Playa Chica is known for its historical significance as a seaside resort and gentle surf. Swimming conditions at both beaches may vary by season.

Laguna Cartagena lies north of the city. Its water surface covers about 68,000 square metres; plants grow along its shores, and some islands serve as resting and breeding grounds for birds. These features describe the lagoon not just as a body of water, but also as a habitat. Those interested in the landscape and birdlife will find a different focus here than at the seaside resorts.

Coastal Routes and Getting Around

Terraza Galvarino Gallardo Nieto is a pedestrian promenade along Cartagena’s coast. It connects Playa Grande and Playa Chica, linking the two beaches. Another connection within the city is Escalera Los Suspiros: it links to the Terraza Galvarino Gallardo Nieto promenade and the intersection of Estado and Los Suspiros streets. Together, the coastal promenade, staircase and street intersection serve as connected landmarks within Cartagena.

Culture and History in Cartagena

Ruta patrimonial Cartagena: Arquitectura, Mar y Poesía is a cultural route in Cartagena with 19 stops. The number of stops gives an idea of the range of points of interest along the route. Its title highlights architecture, the sea and poetry, complementing the beaches and landscape with a cultural perspective on the area.

Estación de Ferrocarriles de Cartagena is another historical landmark. It is protected as a Historic Monument. This protection was established by Decree No. 287 of 22 July 1994. The railway station and cultural route offer different ways to explore Cartagena beyond its coastline.

A Walk Nearby

Playa San Sebastián lies two kilometres north of Cartagena. Its coastal promenade invites you to take long walks. While Playa Grande and Playa Chica shape the choice of beaches in Cartagena, San Sebastián offers another point of reference for longer walks along the coast. These places provide different themes to consider when planning your stay, without requiring beaches, wetlands, culture and walks to be combined into a single itinerary.
