Petorca Between Cultural Heritage and the Fiesta de la Merced
Accommodation in Petorca
Petorca combines a historic town center with a vibrant religious tradition. Around the Plaza de Armas and the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced, the town’s history comes into view; the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Merced adds another annual focal point. If you’re looking for a hotel in Petorca, it’s worth deciding first whether you want to plan your trip around the historic sites or the September event.
Plaza de Armas and Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced
The Plaza de Armas was established in the mid-18th century. Its square layout and central fountain give the plaza a distinct shape. The area around the plaza is Petorca’s administrative, financial, commercial, and religious center. This area therefore combines prominent features of the townscape with important urban functions.
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced dates back to 1600, when a small chapel was built opposite the main square. The church was declared a National Monument in 2009. Inside are a silver tabernacle, a wooden pulpit carved by a local artisan, and 17th-century oil paintings. Other features include a colonial retable embossed in silver and a depiction of Saint Teresa of the Andes carved in Ecuador. Also inside is a life-size, movable wooden figure of Christ’s body, brought to Petorca by Jesuits in 1660. The furnishings bring together different materials, techniques, and historical references.
The birthplace of Manuel Montt
Another landmark in the town’s history is the Casa donde nació el presidente Manuel Montt at Avenida Manuel Montt 845. Manuel Montt was born there on November 4, 1809. The present-day building is not the original one: the original was destroyed by fire in 1929, forty years after it was declared a National Monument. The history of the house therefore distinguishes between the recorded birthplace and the building that stands there today.
The reconstructed birthplace is also home to the museum of the Casa de la Cultura de Petorca. It exhibits items and archives from the printing press La Voz de Petorca. If you plan to visit the museum, check visiting arrangements in advance.
Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Merced
The Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Merced takes place in Petorca on the last Sunday in September. Thousands of worshippers come each year from different parts of the region. Religious dances accompany the procession of the Virgin along an eight-kilometer carpet of flowers. The September date and the procession give the celebration its distinctive rhythm and connect religious practice with a long-standing cultural tradition. If you want to plan your trip around the fiesta, check the dates for that year’s celebration in advance.
Getting there and planning your trip
Buses to Petorca, La Ligua, and Cabildo run daily from Santiago’s Terminal San Borja. Check current schedules before your journey. When planning your stay, you can weigh the two main draws against each other: the historic town center offers the described connections to local history and church art; the last Sunday in September is the annual date of the fiesta.
