Discover Teno: Railway History and Crafts
Accommodation in Teno
Travelers who choose Teno as a destination will find cultural themes with distinct character: railway architecture, musical tradition, pita crafts and events. You can tailor your stay to specific interests. When looking for a hotel in Teno, for example, you can consider whether you are more interested in history, musical traditions or local crafts.
Railway history at Estación de Teno
Estación de Teno is protected as a Chilean historic monument in the “Monumento Histórico” protection category. This designation was declared by Decree No. 23 on February 18, 2017. The station also has historical and architectural value: its colonial style is considered characteristic of the railway architecture of the time in central and south-central Chile. For architecture enthusiasts, it brings together a specifically designated heritage status and a place in the history of railway construction. The protection status and the description of its style answer different questions: the decree designates its status as a monument, while the colonial style places its architecture in historical context.
Music and event traditions
The Banda Instrumental de Teno was founded in 1974 and comprises around 30 children, young people and teachers from the community. Its makeup brings several age groups and teachers together in one ensemble. The groups Los Bandoleros, Los Queltehues and Karabeña, among others, emerged from the Banda. Their names carry the Banda’s story beyond its founding year. The history of a Payador gathering at Teno’s Estadio Municipal dates back to 1981; it became well known at both national and provincial levels. Semana Tenina is considered the most important tourism festival held in Teno. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates for Semana Tenina before planning.
Pita crafts and Fiesta Tenina
Pita has been cultivated and processed in the Domingo Mancilla sector of the municipality of Teno for more than three generations. The process runs from harvesting through crushing, drying, combing and spinning to making crafts. Those interested in the craft can follow the material’s journey from cultivation through several stages of processing. Near Teno, Carmen Gloria continues a tradition of weaving with pita. Together, these offer two distinct perspectives: a production process in Domingo Mancilla and a weaving tradition in the area around the destination.
At Fiesta Tenina 2026, more than 90 stalls featuring food, crafts and typical products were set up in the municipality of Teno in February. While the pita tradition highlights a particular production process, the Fiesta brought together a broader selection of stalls.
Local cultural activities
Another point of interest is the Corporación Cultural de Teno at Avenida Comalle 85. Activities there include theater performances, writing workshops and violin lessons. Unlike the historical perspective offered by the station, the focus here is on cultural activities. As operational details may change, it is best to check in advance what is currently on offer if a particular activity is important to your plans.
