Talca Province brings together a range of travel experiences, from coastal landscapes and dunes to mountain trails, historic buildings and regional specialties. The towns of Constitución, San Clemente, Talca, Pelarco and Empedrado each represent a different side of the province. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth taking a closer look at the specific destinations that interest you.

Coast, Dunes and Natural Areas

Las Rocas de Constitución is a 108.4-hectare natural area on the coast. It stretches from Los Gringos Beach to the mouth of the Río Maule. Its rocks serve as nesting grounds for gulls, boobies, cormorants and pelicans. Another notable coastal area is the Dunas de Putú: they are among Chile’s most extensive dune fields and stretch for more than 30 kilometers from the banks of the Río Maule to La Trinchera.

The Dunas y Humedales de Putú area offers opportunities for trekking, horseback riding and birdwatching. If you are interested in a different landscape, Laguna Querquel in the municipality of Maule has surroundings described as beautiful; the lagoon is suitable for fishing and picnicking. A stretch of the Río Maule near Maule is also a destination for a specific activity: it is considered suitable for kayakers with an intermediate skill level. Cerro La Virgen offers panoramic views of the city of Talca.

Trails and Elevations

Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay is located in the Región del Maule, in Talca Province and the municipality of San Clemente. The protected area accommodates mountaineering activities in areas of varying difficulty. At 2,700 meters above sea level, Cerro El Peine is the highest peak in the reserve.

Two trails differ considerably in length, estimated total duration and difficulty rating, all of which are useful to consider when planning a hike. The Laguna del Alto trail is 14 kilometers long, takes about eight hours in total and is considered challenging. El Peine is four kilometers long, takes about three hours in total and is rated moderate. This makes it possible to compare the time commitment of the two hikes while keeping their different difficulty levels in mind.

Buildings and History

The Santuario Inmaculada Concepción de Corinto stands in Corinto on the Río Maule; the current building dates from 1866. In Pelarco, the Templo Parroquial San José dates from 1787 and is considered one of the oldest temples in the Región del Maule. The Puente sobre el Río Pangue in Talca was built between 1878 and 1880. It is a Historic Monument and is considered the only surviving bridge of its kind.

Railway heritage also shapes the province. Designated a Historic Monument, the Ramal Ferroviario Talca–Constitución runs through the municipalities of Talca, Maule, Pencahue and Constitución, connecting the towns of Talca and Constitución. In Corinto, in the municipality of Pencahue, Estación Corinto is the second station along this line. This information describes a railway line and its heritage; it is not a timetable.
