Chanco offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: the Reserva Nacional Federico Albert combines a large protected area with opportunities for outdoor stays. In town, the Plaza de Armas and the Parroquia de San Ambrosio shape the streetscape; markets and other named points of interest add to what is on offer.

Nature and activities in the Reserva Nacional Federico Albert

The Reserva Nacional Federico Albert is a 145-hectare protected area in the municipality of Chanco. Its entrance is west of the Plaza de Armas. Protected wildlife includes species characteristic of the region: the Chilean tinamou (Nothoprocta perdicaria), the great egret (Ardea alba), the barn owl (Tyto alba), the Chilean swamp warbler (Phleocryptes melanops), and the nutria-like coypu (Myocastor coypus). These names give an impression of the diversity preserved by the protected area; they do not guarantee that you will see any particular animals during a visit.

Facilities for visitors include picnic areas and camping. A campground is intended for people with reduced mobility and has wheelchair-accessible restrooms. The Sendero de Los Sentidos runs beneath eucalyptus and pine trees. It offers blind visitors a safe route. These specific facilities appeal to different interests, but do not support a general claim that all paths or facilities are suitable for everyone. If you are planning to camp, check availability for your travel dates in advance.

Plaza, church, and town history

The Plaza de Armas is in the center of Chanco and serves as a central meeting point for residents and visitors. The entrance to the Reserva Nacional Federico Albert is to the west. This gives you two distinct landmarks in town: the central square and the entrance to the protected area.

The Parroquia de San Ambrosio de Chanco was founded on January 24, 1835, by decree of Bishop José Ignacio Cienfuegos. It is part of the Zona Típica de Chanco and has been considered a defining element of the city’s architectural heritage since 2000. The church building is a national historic monument and preserves the architectural style of the church as it stood before the earthquake of February 27, 2010. Restoration was completed on January 24, 2020. The founding, earthquake, and restoration mark different stages in the building’s history; the 2020 restoration concerns work on the older church building.

The Museo de la Reconstrucción is on Calle Manuel Rodríguez in an old building that was restored after the 2010 earthquake. Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is associated with a religious image that has been in Chanco for more than 250 years. These historical connections add to the picture of the church and the townscape without making any claims about current opening hours or exhibition arrangements.
