Puerto Natales is considered the gateway to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. In the city, museums and public cultural spaces tell the story of the Natales municipality; from the Costanera, views stretch to Seno Última Esperanza and the Patagonian Andes. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the city’s cultural sites separately from the natural attractions in the surrounding area.

History and Culture in Puerto Natales

The Museo Histórico de Puerto Natales documents and presents the history of the Natales municipality. Its timeline spans from the origins of the area around 14,000 years ago to the 1930s. The Museo Histórico de la Municipalidad Natales comprises the Nómades, Colonos, Vida Urbana and Vida Rural galleries. A virtual 360-degree tour takes you through the premises and gives you an insight into the layout of the museum rooms.

Cultural landmarks can also be found throughout the city. The Mural pueblos originarios in the city center commemorates Indigenous peoples and tells the story of the Kawésqar and Aónikenk. On Plaza de Armas Arturo Prat, there is a locomotive originally used to transport workers from Frigorífico Puerto Bories.

Espacio Cultural Natalis offers film series, art workshops, exhibitions and cultural education programs. One specific example of its events was the 34th edition of the Festival Costumbrista Chilote in Puerto Natales: over two days, it featured music, dance and traditional cuisine. This information refers to that edition; it does not describe a recurring annual program.

Costanera and Cueva del Milodón

The Costanera Pedro Montt in Puerto Natales offers views of Seno Última Esperanza and the Patagonian Andes. Farther north lies the Monumento Natural Cueva del Milodón, 25 kilometers from Puerto Natales. It is part of Chile’s Sistema Nacional de Áreas Silvestres Protegidas. The Cueva del Milodón is scientifically significant because remains of the extinct Darwin’s ground sloth (Mylodon darwini) were found there. Its archaeological value is also linked to the fact that people lived there around 12,000 years ago.

The Cueva Grande trail in the natural monument was designed for people with reduced mobility. It can be used with a wheelchair and assistance as far as the viewpoint inside the cave. This information refers to this trail and the specified viewpoint. It does not apply generally to all trails in the protected area.

The National Park as Another Destination

Puerto Natales is considered the gateway to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine; the park is in the broader Última Esperanza travel region, not in Puerto Natales itself. Ecotourism activities offered there include camping, hiking, mountaineering, boat trips, river excursions, glacier crossings and horseback riding. The range therefore includes activities on foot as well as options on the water and in the glacier area. When planning, you can distinguish which experiences matter for your trip: the city’s history and culture in Puerto Natales, or the various activities in the national park.

Getting to Puerto Natales

The road connection from Punta Arenas follows Ruta 9, covers about 250 kilometers and takes approximately three hours. The journey can be made by intercity bus. Aeródromo Teniente Julio Gallardo (PNT) is about 15 minutes from the city center and offers seasonal direct flights from Santiago to Puerto Natales. Check flight schedules before your trip, as the flights are seasonal.

Another way to get there is by ferry from Puerto Montt via the Ruta de los Canales. Check the current schedule and availability before planning. This lets you weigh up the journey to Puerto Natales based on your departure point and the most suitable mode of transport.
