Trekking, National Parks, and Antarctic Experiences

Antártica Chilena Province combines striking natural scenery with very different travel plans: on Isla Navarino, the challenging Dientes de Navarino circuit crosses remote terrain, while Cabo de Hornos and Yendegaia national parks each showcase their own landscapes and wildlife. There are also cultural points of interest in Puerto Williams and trips to the Antarctic Peninsula. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, it’s worth first deciding which of these experiences will shape your stay.

Dientes de Navarino: Plan for the Time and Terrain

Dientes de Navarino is considered the southernmost trekking circuit in the world and is among the most challenging treks in South America. You should allow four to five days for the hike. The route crosses difficult terrain with loose rock, snow, and peat bogs—making its duration and ground conditions essential considerations when planning. The trailhead is in Puerto Williams, two kilometers outside town, beyond the bridge over the Río Róbalo. Hikers must register the start and end of their trek with the Carabineros de Chile. This circuit is therefore clearly different from shorter excursions: its duration, challenging route, and mandatory registration are important points to consider before setting out.

Cabo de Hornos and Yendegaia

Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos is located in the Wollaston Archipelago and was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on June 29, 2005. Its vegetation includes low-growing forests of Magellanic beech, Magellanic tundra, shrub formations, and narrow stretches of coastal grassland. Wildlife that can be seen in the park’s marine environments includes leopard seals, whales, sea lions, elephant seals, chungungos, and Peale’s and Chilean dolphins. The park has a small landing dock, from which a footpath leads to Faro Hornos.

Travel to Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos from Punta Arenas is possible by sea, or by flying to Puerto Williams and continuing by sea. The listed access routes to Parque Nacional Yendegaia also differ: they lead from Puerto Williams by sea or overland via Route Y-85, which runs to Lago Fagnano on Tierra del Fuego. Yendegaia currently has no visitor services or infrastructure for public use. The park is home to species including red foxes, Magellanic woodpeckers, elephant seals, kelp gulls, and giant petrels. When planning, it is therefore important not to mistake information about access for evidence that visitor services or public infrastructure are available.

Yagán Knowledge and Culture on Isla Navarino

In Puerto Williams, the Museo Antropológico Martín Gusinde preserves the natural and cultural heritage of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago through its significant ethnographic collection. Three kilometers west of Puerto Williams, on Isla Navarino, lies Parque Etnobotánico Omora. It promotes the preservation of traditional ecological knowledge, particularly that of the Yagán people. The two places draw attention to different aspects of the region: the museum focuses on the heritage of the archipelago, while Omora centers on traditional knowledge of ecological relationships.

The Ruta Patrimonial Bahía Wulaia on the western side of Isla Navarino also brings together landscape and history. It is approximately 56 kilometers long and is connected to 7,000 years of history and use by the Yagán people. Its approximate length and historical connection give the route a different character from the multi-day trek on Dientes de Navarino: here, the focus is on the Yagán’s long history.

Trips to the Antarctic Peninsula

There are different ways to travel in Antártica Chilena. An expedition cruise departs from Punta Arenas and travels through the Strait of Magellan and the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula. The sea journey takes several days; because places are limited, early reservations are required. Expedition flights land at Teniente Marsh Airfield (TNM) at Frei Base on King George Island. The flight takes about two hours and must be booked through a tour operator.

The Full Day Antártica program is accessible only by charter flight from Punta Arenas and is subject to weather conditions and strict regulations. It includes guided hikes to observe gentoo and Adélie penguins, as well as Weddell seals. If weather conditions allow, the program also includes a Zodiac trip to Collins Glacier or Ardley Island. When planning, take these conditions and the different access routes into account rather than treating the sea voyage and flight program as the same kind of excursion.
