Visitors choosing Osorno as a destination can explore different themes, from city history, paleontology and architecture to handicrafts. The museums tell stories from different periods and about different subjects, while distinctive buildings offer another perspective on the city. When planning your trip, it helps to choose places based on what you would like to explore in more depth.

Museums and Osorno’s History

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Osorno was founded on October 18, 1946, at the initiative of Víctor Sánchez Aguilera, then director of the Liceo de Hombres de Osorno. It is housed in a building dating from 1929: the exterior façade is made of concrete, while the interiors feature fine woods. The museum’s founding year and the building’s construction year therefore mark different chapters in its history.

The Museo Fuerte Reina Luisa tells the story of Osorno from the city’s founding on March 27, 1558, to the consolidation of its resettlement in 1808. It also acknowledges the role of the Mapuche-Huilliche people. If you are interested in historical developments, this museum offers a different time frame from the Museo Histórico Municipal.

The houses on Avenida Juan Mackenna also tell the story of the city: these wooden buildings date from the late 19th century and are associated with German immigration. They are the only buildings in Osorno designated as national historical monuments. The street thus offers a distinctive architectural feature alongside the museum buildings.

Pilauco and the Paleontological Collection

Pilauco is a paleontological site in the middle of Osorno’s urban area, in today’s Los Notros neighborhood. It has existed for more than 12,000 years. The Museo Pleistocénico Osorno displays fossils dated to 15,000 years ago and found at the Pilauco excavation site.

The Museo Pleistocénico’s exhibition includes dioramas, replicas, interactive modules and representative fossils from excavations to date. The finds are presented alongside a range of exhibits that offer different ways to explore the subject. The museum is located in Parque Chuyaca. From there, a walk with a specialized guide leads to the Pilauco excavation site. If you plan to take this guided walk, check the dates in advance.

Architecture and Handicrafts

Catedral San Mateo is designed in the pointed-arch Gothic style. Its features include mosaics, a 42-meter-high tower and a copper roof. When comparing the buildings, note their different forms and materials: the cathedral is defined by its pointed-arch style, tower and roof, while the wooden construction and period of origin stand out in the houses on Avenida Juan Mackenna.

Handcrafted artworks are sold at Pueblito Artesanal, also known as Centro de Artesanía Local. They are made using traditional methods and typical materials from southern Chile, such as leather, wool and wood. The handicrafts thus complement the historical and paleontological themes with a glimpse into local design and material craftsmanship.
