Hualpén: Nature, Coast and Culture

Wetlands, coastal landscapes and culture give Hualpén many different facets. For your planning, options range from observation points at Laguna Verde to beaches and forest trails, as well as historical collections and events in the commune.

Lagoons, wetlands and forest

Near Hualpén lies Laguna Verde, a freshwater body approximately 290 meters long and 85 meters wide. These measurements are approximate and may vary depending on water levels and precipitation. Native trees such as boldo, litre, huillipatagua, arrayán, avellano, peumo, piñol, maqui and huayo grow around the lagoon.

From Mirador Laguna Verde, you can observe the wetland and forest. The Ruta Laguna Verde, entre miradores trail passes through the wetland; from several viewpoints, you can see the lagoon, typical forest vegetation, the birds that live there and nesting sites of the garza cuca (Ardea cocoi). Humedal Piedra del Agua is also a biological corridor with hydrophilic vegetation. More than 50 bird species were observed there in 2025.

In the Comuna de Hualpén, the Hiking por el Bosque Nativo Centenario route is a low-intensity circuit through coastal sclerophyll forest. Stops explain the flora and fauna typical of the Península de Hualpén; along the way, you can observe various species and ecosystems.

Coast, beaches and trails

Playa desembocadura del río Bío Bío is about 750 meters long, has black sand and offers views of the Pacific Ocean. It is not suitable for swimming; visitors go there to enjoy nature, fish, take photographs and picnic. From Cerro Pompón in Parque Pedro del Río Zañartu, the views extend to where inland waters meet the sea, as well as to cliffs, beaches, caletas, tombolos, marshes and spits.

The beaches along the coast of the Península de Hualpén are surrounded by endemic flora and fauna. Hiking, cycling and kayaking are among the outdoor activities available there. A hiking trail to Playa Ramuntcho passes through native forest, offers open views of the Pacific Ocean and then descends to the beach. The calm waters of Playa Ramuntcho are suitable for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking; small coastal caves lie along the shore.

Another guided route passes through native forest and the meadows of Parque Pedro del Río Zañartu before descending to Playa Rocoto. In Chome, the remains of the former Ballenera Trinidad recall the area’s industrial past. People hike on the surrounding hills to enjoy panoramic ocean views.

History and culture in the commune

Near Hualpén, the Casona Museo preserves objects that Pedro del Río Zañartu brought to Chile from his travels across various continents, including pieces from the ancient world and objects from Asian cultures. The Casona was built in the 1870s and used as a home until 1934—for more than five decades—after which it served as a museum. Parque Museo Pedro del Río Zañartu in the Comuna de Hualpén was declared a Santuario de la Naturaleza and a Monumento Nacional in 1976. Its collections also include a collection donated by Violeta Parra in the 20th century.

Caleta Lenga is considered a typical, touristically attractive neighborhood and an area for artisanal fishing. The 2022–2026 municipal cultural plan describes activities by the Centro Cultural de Hualpén in collaboration with students, groups and cultural workers in the commune. These include inclusive workshops focused on diversity, held in person and online. The plan also mentions free artistic and performing arts activities organized by the Departamento de Cultura. The 2022–2026 cultural plan describes the Fiesta de San Pedro on June 29 in the Caletas Lenga, Chome and Peroné, with boats decorated with flags and a tribute to San Pedro, the patron saint of fishermen. Some celebrations were interrupted during the COVID-19 period; therefore, check current event dates before your trip. For the Fiesta del Changai in Caleta Chome, the plan lists a date in January, around 25 sales stalls, free seafood tastings, and artistic and musical events. Check in advance whether an edition is taking place.
