Discover Chañaral from different perspectives: Pan de Azúcar National Park brings together marine and terrestrial habitats, the coast offers a range of activities and landscapes, and historic sites tell stories of the church, mining and the town’s history. For your trip planning, it is worth considering these highlights separately, since access and conditions vary depending on your destination.

Pan de Azúcar National Park

Pan de Azúcar National Park extends across the provinces of Antofagasta and Chañaral and the municipalities of Taltal and Chañaral. Its habitats include both marine and terrestrial areas. Its plant life is also remarkably diverse: the park is home to more than 18 cactus species, including endemic species. You can kayak around Pan de Azúcar Island.

Access to the national park requires a private vehicle or a tour operator. Route C-120 connects the port of Chañaral with the park’s administrative area. Check access conditions before setting out. If kayaking is part of your plans, check availability in advance; providers may change.

Coastal Landscapes and Activities

At Playa Portofino, you can surf, spearfish, scuba dive and sport fish. Sea conditions and services may vary. Playa El Caleuche is suitable for swimming, sport fishing and water sports, as well as observing seabirds. The beach has two vehicle access points, picnic shelters, sunshades, play areas and parking. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.

Playa Hippie is on a rocky stretch of coastline with strong waves. From there, expansive views take in the surrounding area and Pan de Azúcar Island. Wildlife watching, photography and excursions are possible; swimming is permitted only in certain areas. Check locally which areas are open for swimming.

Playa Las Piscinas is in Chañaral Province: a rocky beach with pools on a rocky headland, some areas of which are sheltered from strong waves. Possible activities include swimming, fishing and water sports, as well as nature observation, photography, walks and hikes. Activity conditions may vary seasonally; trails and the shoreline may also be subject to varying conditions. While strong waves shape the coastal character of Playa Hippie, some areas of Las Piscinas are sheltered.

Balneario Flamenco has campsites, restaurants and a craft fair. Basic amenities also include access roads, shops, hostels and a fishing cove. Check locally which services are currently available.

Churches, Historic Buildings and Museum

The Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Chañaral was established as a vice-parish on June 7, 1864. It was recognized as a Historic Monument in 1985 by Supreme Decree No. 0727. Casa Molina stands right next to the church and has been recognized as a Historic Monument since 1977.

The Teatro Windsor is a preserved 19th-century building in the Chañaral Fire Department complex; construction began in 1887. Founded in 1982, the Museo de Chañaral has six exhibition rooms covering prehistory, history, paleontology, entomofauna and mineralogy. The Faro del Milenio, also called the Faro Monumental Chañaral, is a 15-meter-tall lighthouse with ornamental design and copper cladding. It includes a small amphitheater for outdoor performances.

Mining History and Religious Tradition

In the town of El Salado, you can see and visit traces of the mining boom. These include architecture from that period, homes, water tanks, signs and tracks, as well as ore carts and sleepers made of adobe, wood and sheet zinc. The town also has a park where residents and visitors can enjoy leisure and recreation activities.

The procession tradition at the Gruta de la Virgen dates back to its inauguration on December 8, 1935.
