When planning a stay in Chile Chico, it is helpful to distinguish between the town and the municipality. Cultural sites and historic buildings are in the town; rock paintings and other traces of Tehuelche culture, by contrast, are found throughout the municipality. The Jeinimeni sector of Parque Nacional Patagonia is also nearby. This allows you to consider urban culture, regional history, and places outside town as distinct focuses for your trip.

Culture and History in Chile Chico

The Casa de la Cultura de Chile Chico houses the Museo de Chile Chico, an auditorium, and a multipurpose room. The museum’s collection includes fossilized wood, skulls of native animals, and human remains, as well as worked and polished stones. It also includes hunting tools associated with ancient hunter-gatherer communities that lived on the southern shore of Lago General Carrera. The collection thus brings together natural materials and evidence of human activity. The tools’ connection to these communities provides a specific point of reference for understanding them.

Calle Simón Bolívar, locally also known as “Calle del Piojo,” offers another perspective on the town’s history. Some of Chile Chico’s oldest adobe buildings, with shingle roofs, stand along the street; only a few have been preserved in their original condition. Here, the focus is on historic architecture in the townscape, while the museum brings together a range of material evidence.

Rock paintings and other traces of Tehuelche culture can be found throughout the municipality. This culture inhabited the area around 5,000 years ago; the evidence is considered to represent the region’s earliest human settlement. It can be seen in caves, rock shelters, stone houses, and on rock walls. Their presence throughout the municipality makes these remains geographically distinct from the cultural sites and historic buildings in the town.

Squares, Views, and Events

Plaza de Chile Chico is a public square in the town, two blocks south of Lago General Carrera. The Fiesta de la Cosecha Comunitaria takes place there every year, celebrating and harvesting cherries and apricots. If you would like to include the festival in your trip plans, check the dates in advance. During the summer season, the Festival de la Voz Chile Chico is also a gathering place for the community and visitors; check the dates for the relevant edition if you plan to attend.

The similarly named squares have different functions: Plaza de Chile Chico is a public square and the setting for the harvest festival. Plaza del Viento is on Cerro de las Banderas in Chile Chico and is a viewpoint overlooking the town and Lago General Carrera. If you are finding your way around, the two places are easy to distinguish by their roles in the townscape.
