Villa O'higgins lies at the end of the Carretera Austral and at the beginning of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The town is located at the mouth of the RĂo Mayer, opposite Lago O'higgins. The lake is 836 meters deep and is considered the deepest lake in the Americas; it was formed by the O'higgins Glacier. The trails in Parque Glaciar Mosco, local history, and water-based excursions offer different points of reference when choosing your destination.

Hiking in Parque Glaciar Mosco

Parque Glaciar Mosco is a protected national property administered by the Municipality of Villa O'higgins and has a network of trekking trails. About 100 meters east of the main square in the town center are the park administration office and the starting point for the trail network and the Ruta Patrimonial Glaciar RĂo Mosco. This location provides a practical reference point for planning excursions.

The trails vary considerably in length and hiking time. Sendero Mirador del Valle is rated easy and is about 4 kilometers long; the round trip is estimated to take approximately two hours. Sendero La Bandera is a moderate to challenging mountain hike of about 3.4 kilometers, with a round-trip hiking time of around two and a half hours. The moderate Sendero CĂłndores is an approximately 5.5-kilometer loop, takes about four hours, and connects Sendero La Bandera with Sendero Mirador del Valle.

For longer hikes, other time estimates are relevant: the moderate to challenging Sendero Río Mosco Norte, also known by its registered name, “Refugio,” runs about 8 kilometers between the park administration office and the shelter; the round trip is estimated to take approximately eight hours. The challenging Sendero La Dormilona is an approximately 12-kilometer mountain hike from the park administration office to the La Dormilona viewpoint and back. It is estimated to take approximately 14 hours. When choosing, compare not only trail length but also the stated hiking time and difficulty rating. Trail conditions can change; check the latest information before your hike.

Historic Trails and Wildlife

The Ruta Patrimonial Parque Glaciar Mosco is a linear, approximately 12.4-kilometer route that is fully signposted. In places, it follows an old trail used by the area's first residents in 1930. Its historic connection is therefore an integral part of the trail description. The forest along the route is home to huemul deer, Andean deer, and culpeo foxes, among other animals; pumas are occasionally seen. These animals are part of the habitat, but sightings are not guaranteed.

You can also explore history in town: the Museo de la Patagonia Padre Antonio Ronchi is located in a Catholic church. From 1974 to the end of 1987, the church served as a community center and a collection point for supplies. The museum presents the architecture and symbolism of the old church, as well as the history of settlement in the municipality.

Lake and Glacier Excursions

Lago Cisnes is 11 kilometers north of Villa O'higgins and is 6 kilometers long. Fishing, birdwatching, and recreational boating are among the activities offered there. On the south shore is a 2-kilometer-long main beach, used by locals and visitors as a swimming spot during the summer season. The beach is therefore a seasonal part of what the lake has to offer.

In Villa O'higgins, kayaking activities on the municipality's lakes are offered with local guides, including excursions on Lago Cisnes, trips on the RĂo Mayer, and the Three Lakes Traverse. A full-day boat expedition to the O'higgins Glacier and Chico Glacier is also offered. Weather and operator availability affect navigation; confirm dates and whether trips are running in advance. Activities offered in Villa O'higgins with local guides also include ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, technical mountaineering, and ice climbing in the Southern Ice Fields. These activities are seasonal; conditions and operator availability may vary.

Getting There and Other Routes

From Coyhaique, you can reach Villa O'higgins via the Carretera Austral after approximately 575 kilometers and about twelve hours of driving. The route includes long gravel sections and a mandatory ferry crossing. As these are approximate estimates and road and ferry conditions can change, check ferry schedules for your trip.

Another option is the binational route from Villa O'higgins to Chaltén in Argentina. It is 130 kilometers long, combines trekking and boat travel, and passes through sections of Laguna del Desierto. It cannot be completed by vehicle. This makes it fundamentally different from traveling via the Carretera Austral: sections of the route must be completed on foot and by boat.
