Penedo Between Nature and Finnish Heritage
Accommodation in Penedo
Penedo combines Atlantic Forest landscapes with the cultural heritage of the Finnish colony. When looking for a hotel in Penedo, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on natural sites, viewpoints, or historical and cultural places. Each site is distinguished by its specific location and by what makes it unique.
Forest Landscapes and Waterfalls
The Parque Municipal Turístico Ecológico de Penedo (PAMTEP) covers a total of 3,014 hectares. It borders the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, lies within the Atlantic Forest biome, and spans elevations from 300 to 1,600 meters. Both its elevation and its place within the rainforest are defining landscape features of the park. Individual natural sites offer more specific points of reference, such as along the Rio das Pedras or in Alto Penedo.
Cachoeira de Deus is a waterfall on the Rio das Pedras with a natural pool in Alto Penedo. A 300-meter path, including a short walk, leads there. At Poço das Esmeraldas, the color is a distinctive feature: around midday, the sunlight gives it a greenish hue. The site is 100 meters before Três Bacias. This is the first waterfall formed by the Rio das Pedras; it is also in Alto Penedo and has cold, clear water. The two sites can therefore be distinguished by their respective features: the hue at Poço das Esmeraldas, and Três Bacias’s position in the sequence of waterfalls and its clear, cold water.
Três Cachoeiras offers a different point of reference: it is on the right-hand side of Estrada das Três Cachoeiras, in a densely forested area suitable for picnics. If you are looking for a viewpoint, you will find one at Pico do Penedinho. After a short walk uphill, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Penedo. Pico is on private property. Access requires a permit from the chocolate factory on Avenida das Pedras, at the corner of Rua Henry Bertell. Take this requirement into account when planning your visit.
Finnish History and Cultural Sites
The Finnish colony of Penedo was founded in 1929, and the town preserves the memory of its Finnish colonists. Among its historic buildings is the Casarão, an old mansion dating from the coffee cycle. Casa de Pedra has a different historical connection: it was built by a Finnish colonist for his Finnish fiancée. The two buildings thus represent different aspects of the town’s history.
The Museu Eva Hilden da Cultura Finlandesa de Penedo displays objects brought from Finland. These include tapestries made on Finnish looms, old embroidery, and posters and prints from regions of Finland. Books, brochures, and maps are also part of the collection. At the Baile Finlandês, Finnish folk dances such as Jenkka and Letkis are joined by waltzes, tangos, polkas, mazurkas, samba, pagode, and rock. The collection and the dance tradition offer different cultural highlights to discover alongside the historic buildings.
Other places to visit can be distinguished by their location and focus. Casa do Papai Noel is located at Rua das Velas 100 in the Shopping Pequena Finlândia shopping center. This themed shopping center recreates a typical Finnish colony. LELUMUSEO is a toy museum at Avenida Michelângelo 216 in Jardim Martinelli in Penedo. Together with the museum of Finnish culture and the historic buildings, these sites offer different insights into the town’s Finnish heritage.
