Mendes: Railway Heritage, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Mendes
Mendes is one of the 14 municipalities on the Vale do Café tourist route. Local attractions include railway heritage, 19th-century architecture, natural destinations and cultural events. You can tailor your stay to suit different interests: history, scenery or a particular event date can each provide a different focus.
Railway Heritage and Architectural History
Several named sites recall Mendes’s railway history. Tunnels 12 and 12 Bis are historic landmarks of Brazilian railway engineering. Tunnel 12 Bis was built in 1815 in the Humberto Antunes neighborhood. Two railway stations also help tell the story: Estação Ferroviária Neri Ferreira is a monument that originally opened in 1911; Estação de Humberto Antunes is part of the railway heritage and originally opened in 1894. Together, the tunnels and stations represent different aspects of the local railway heritage.
Mendes preserves examples of 19th-century architecture. The old Matriz church is a testament to the town’s history; the Antiga Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz was built in 1857. Ladeira João Vieira offers another historic route through the town. Laid out in the 19th century, the road is paved with irregular stones and connects the town center to the local cemetery. The church, railway station and road offer different perspectives on Mendes’s architectural and transportation history.
Garden, Viewpoint and Natural Destinations
Horto Municipal is located at the end of Morro do Socorro. It is considered the site of Brazil’s largest planting of Atlantic Forest seedlings. A hiking trail leads to Mirante do Cruzeiro, where you can enjoy panoramic views of hills and valleys. A waterfall near Hotel Cascatinha Morsing is also among the destinations to visit in Mendes. Check access conditions for the waterfall before your trip.
If you plan to visit Jequitibá Milenar, take the walk and access requirement into account: visiting requires a 40-minute walk through Martins Costa, as well as permission from Sr. Tavinho, the landowner. Confirm access conditions before your trip. The natural destinations therefore differ not only in terms of garden, viewpoint and waterfall, but also in the visit planning each requires.
Cultural Events in Mendes
“Samba e Choro na Praça” is a weekly cultural event held at Praça Dr. João Neri. The program includes free live performances, local cuisine and handicrafts. Before your trip, check whether the event is taking place during your stay. Mendes’s cultural centers offer exhibitions, workshops, musical performances, theater and events celebrating the municipality’s traditions. If you would like to include a cultural program in your trip, check the schedule for your travel dates.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
The drive from Rio de Janeiro to Mendes takes about two hours and follows BR-116 (Presidente Dutra) and RJ-145. This is an approximate travel time, and road conditions can change. Check the current route before setting off. When planning your hotel stay, you can first decide which themes matter most to you: historic buildings and railway heritage, cultural events or trips into the countryside. For a visit to Jequitibá Milenar, the walk and permission are specific planning considerations; for the waterfall and events, check access conditions or schedules.
