Colônia Paricatuba: History and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Colônia Paricatuba
Visitors to Colônia Paricatuba can explore historic sites, river landscapes, and beaches in the surrounding area. Vila de Paricatuba and its various beach destinations offer different highlights, from architecture and ruins to seasonal visits by the water.
Historic Sites in Vila de Paricatuba
At the center of Vila de Paricatuba stands a Belle Époque mansion. The building, whose walls are covered with climbing plants, is surrounded by century-old trees. Its architecture and old-growth vegetation give the site a distinctive historic character. In 2015, the Vila was designated an intangible historical and cultural heritage site of the state of Amazonas.
The Belizário Pena building is also part of the history of the area around Colônia Paricatuba. Built in 1898 with materials imported from Europe, it initially housed Italian immigrants who had come to Amazonas in search of work. The mansion and Belizário Pena represent different historical aspects of the Vila and its surroundings.
A footpath leads from the mansion to other ruins. Along the way, it offers views of the Rio Negro and the beach, as well as access to restaurants. This makes it possible to combine historic architecture with a walk through the Vila and views of the river landscape.
Route, Tasting, and Canoe Trip
A visitor program associated with 2026 describes the Caminhos de Paricatuba route. It begins at the Paricatuba ruins and leads to the Vila de Paricatuba’s main historic cultural sites. The route thus connects several places that showcase the area’s historic character.
Activities along the route include a tasting of Bolo de Capim-Santo, led by local residents in a traditional thatched hut, and a canoe trip through an igapó. The tasting adds a local dish to the visit, while the canoe trip complements the historic theme with an experience on the water. Check in advance whether the route and its individual activities will be available on your visit date.
Beaches, Food, and Seasonal Conditions
Praia do Lago has bars and restaurants for tourists and visitors. After reaching the riverbank, you need to cross by motorboat or canoe to reach the beach. Water conditions and the availability of local transport may vary, so check the crossing arrangements before your visit.
At Praia dos Restaurantes, eateries serve regional breakfasts, lunches featuring typical regional fish dishes, drinks, and other beverages. As the offerings vary among several establishments, it is best to ask locally about the specific options.
Paricatuba’s beaches are visited by tourists and local residents during summer. Praia de Paricatuba is located toward Mirante da Virgem at a former port where boats from the Vila used to dock. During the high-water season from December to June, the beach may be almost completely submerged at the peak.
Praia da Bica is next to Praia do Inglês. The dry season from July to November is considered a suitable time to visit these beaches; access is more limited when the rivers are high. The seasonal notes therefore differ by beach: at Praia de Paricatuba, the main concern is possible flooding at the peak of the high-water season, while access to Praia da Bica and Praia do Inglês is more limited during high water.
The private Praia do Inglês is located along the access road beyond the Paricatuba ruins; access is via a wooden staircase. Check access conditions before setting out. When planning, keep in mind that this beach has its own access route and that conditions may vary depending on the water level.
