Nicolás Suárez Province: Nature, River and Culture
Accommodation in Nicolás Suárez Province
Nicolás Suárez Province can be explored through a range of themes: protected forest landscapes, river and leisure routes, and places of remembrance in Porvenir. This lets you consider nature and cultural interests side by side and shape your trip around the experiences that interest you most.
Forest Landscapes and Nature Conservation
The Área Natural de Manejo Integrado del Bosque de Porvenir is a municipal protected area in Nicolás Suárez Province and is part of Bolivia’s National System of Protected Areas. When it was created, the aim was to preserve the natural heritage within its boundaries while also enabling the sustainable development of the local population. Practical measures and integrated forest management processes involving the active participation of the population were planned to support the management and use of natural resources and biodiversity.
Visitor experiences in the area include admiring the Amazonian forests, taking trips along the Río Tahuamanu, and learning about the communities’ sustainable management of forest products. The focus is therefore on the forest and the relationship between local participation and resource use. If you are planning a specific visit, check access and arrangements in advance.
River Routes and Visitor Experiences
The Ruta del Pescado is a gastronomic and leisure route from Puerto Tahuamanu to Puerto Cachuelita. It offers the opportunity to travel along the Río Tahuamanu, and the Balneario Palma Real is also part of the route. This gives it a different focus from the protected area: here, the emphasis is on a river trip and gastronomic and leisure experiences, while the protected area focuses primarily on forest landscapes and sustainable forest management. For planning purposes, it is a good idea to check the current arrangements for the route and the Balneario in advance.
Another visitor experience is the Ruta del Café Don Peki at the Chaco of Jorge Alvarez Najar, in the community of Santa Fe, in the Municipio de Porvenir. Its name puts the focus on coffee, setting it apart from the forest and river themes of the other offerings. This allows you to consider local visitor experiences according to their focus: conservation and forest management, gastronomy and leisure by the river, or coffee. If you are planning a visit to Don Peki, check opening times and visitor requirements in advance.
Porvenir: Remembrance and Views of the River
In the center of Porvenir, the Monumento del Siringuero commemorates the courage of the region’s inhabitants during Bolivia’s rubber boom. The Mirador de Porvenir is also located in the town center and offers views of the Río Tahuamanu. The two places offer different perspectives: the monument points to the region’s history, while the viewpoint looks out over the river landscape. In Porvenir, a specific historical commemoration and a landmark for taking in the landscape come together.
Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination of Pando
The wider destination of Pando also has cultural and historical landmarks, particularly in Cobija. The Monumento El Carretón is located there at Parque Piñata on Avenida 9 de febrero. The three-headed Monumento a los Héroes de la Batalla de Bahía also stands in Parque Piñata on the same avenue. Sculptor David Paz created it to honor the Battle of Bahía.
The Monumento El Cristo in Cobija was created by sculptor David Paz Ramos on June 24, 1995, during the term of Mayor Aníbal Arab Fadul. Barrio Junín, the oldest neighborhood in Municipio Cobija, was declared Bolivia’s Historic Cultural Heritage by a national law in 2014. These places offer different historical points of emphasis: one monument commemorates a battle, another is dedicated to a depiction of Christ, and a neighborhood has received national heritage recognition.
Parque Piñata, known as an urban tourism park, was inaugurated in December 2008 and established as a recreational and leisure area for the population. It is located on the site of the former runway of the old airport. The story of its creation gives the park its own connection to Cobija’s urban development, distinct from the historical themes of the monuments.
