Sucre: History and Culture
Accommodation in Sucre
For a trip to Sucre, its history, architecture, and museums offer a variety of cultural and historical points of interest. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional historical and architectural value. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus primarily on the history of independence, historical collections, or Barrio Santa Ana.
Historical collections with different focuses
The Casa de la Libertad preserves and displays the original declaration of independence of Alto Perú, as well as contemporary portraits of Simón Bolívar, Antonio José de Sucre, and José Ballivián. The Museo Dr. Alfredo Gutiérrez Valenzuela houses European furniture and decorative objects from the 18th to the 20th century that belonged to Dr. Alfredo Gutiérrez Valenzuela. The collections cover different themes: the Casa focuses on a historical document and portraits, while the Museo Dr. Alfredo Gutiérrez Valenzuela features objects of European origin spanning several centuries.
Sucre and the destination of Chuquisaca
Sucre, Bolivia’s first capital, was founded by the Spanish in the first half of the 16th century. In the wider destination of Chuquisaca, well-preserved religious buildings from the 16th century—including San Lázaro, San Francisco, and Santo Domingo—illustrate the blending of local building traditions with styles introduced from Europe. Chuquisaca thus provides a regional architectural context for the city’s history. These buildings offer a different perspective from the museum collections: religious architecture and the blending of different building traditions shape how the region’s history is viewed.
Barrio Santa Ana: landmarks and stories
In December 2022, the municipal government opened a tourist route in Barrio Santa Ana. Its stops included the Palacete «El Guereo» (1892), the Museo Convento de La Recoleta, the Capilla Tata Solano, the Callejones de los Gatos, and the Museo de Tanga Tanga. The legend of the Duendes de la Penka was also presented during the tour. The different stops give the route a character distinct from a visit focused primarily on museum collections.
During a tour of Barrio Santa Ana, city guides at the Museo de Tanga Tanga told the story of a treasure hidden deep within Cerro Churuquella. If you would like to include the tour in your travel plans, check in advance whether it is currently available.
Cultural activities and visitor services
In 2023, the municipal government’s tourism and heritage preservation departments held cultural heritage workshops at the Museo de Niños Tanga Tanga. They were intended for primary school children from the municipality’s educational institutions. The workshops reflect a distinct focus in cultural outreach: they centered on children from the municipality’s educational institutions.
At the Museo de Arte Indígena ASUR, visitors can get free museum guides in English, French, and German, as well as coffee and various mate drinks. Since visitor services may change, it is recommended that you check whether these offerings are available before your visit.
