Río Grande brings together nature watching, coastal landscapes, and themes from history and art. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing seasonal nature experiences from cultural attractions: ice skating on Laguna de los Patos is a winter activity, while in summer the focus there is on grasses, flowers, and birds.

Getting There and Getting Around

The city of Río Grande is accessible via the fully paved Ruta Nacional N°3. The road leads into the city from Paso San Sebastián and the Strait of Magellan, connecting it with the rest of Argentine territory. Aeropuerto Internacional Río Grande is also located in the city. If you plan to travel by air, check current flight routes and schedules before your trip.

Coast, Wetlands, and Birdwatching

Reserva Natural Urbana Punta Popper was established in 2012 to protect typical coastal grasslands. Resident birds nest there, while migratory birds stop over in summer. The coast is low-lying, sandy, and muddy, with numerous pebbles and a pronounced tidal range.

Along the waterfront promenade within the city of Río Grande, there are information panels about the biodiversity of the reserve and observation points. A pair of binoculars is located in front of the municipal administration building. Check the current information about these observation facilities on site.

Reserva Natural Urbana Laguna de los Patos encompasses springs and spring outlets in flood-prone terrain known locally as vega. Bird species from various families can be found there. In summer, visitors can observe grasses, flowers, and birds; in winter, weather permitting, the lagoon serves as a natural ice rink for skating. Birdwatching along self-guided routes is also considered a tourist activity in the city and surrounding area.

Missionary History and Museums

Misión Salesiana Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria was first established in 1893 on the north bank of the Río Grande. After a flood and a major fire, it was moved to its present location near Cabo Domingo on November 6, 1897. The complex includes Capilla Histórica, built in 1898; a workshop where the Sisters of María Auxiliadora taught Selk’nam women; and Casa de la Misión. Museo Monseñor Fagnano, a museum of history and natural sciences, is also part of the complex. It displays evidence of the Salesian missions in southern Patagonia, including the history of missionaries in the north of the island, Indigenous peoples, and significant shipwrecks. The collection also includes specimens from Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica.

Museo Municipal Virginia Choquintel displays objects, documents, and photographs relating to the Selk’nam, local industries, oil and communications, as well as local flora and fauna. In Río Grande, the permanent exhibition “Malvinas en la Memoria” commemorates the events of 1982. It displays objects used in the conflict, photographs, newspapers, soldiers’ letters, and testimonies from veterans who took part.

Museo Fueguino de Arte displays the Provincial Art Collection, with works by provincial and national artists, in three exhibition halls. It reopened in 2023 under the name Ninì Bernardello. A room with permanent and movable panels is used to present projects for workshops, training sessions, and discussion events.

Art and Practical Visitor Information

Casa de la Cultura Ángela Loig has 450 seats, lighting and sound equipment, two artists’ dressing rooms, and an exhibition area. Local and national arts events are held there throughout the year; specific event dates should be checked separately. At Paseo del Viento, stalls sell handicrafts made from regional lenga wood, clay, and wool. Artistic performances occasionally take place in a central area.

Teachers at an educational institution can request an appointment for a guided tour of Museo Municipal Virginia Choquintel. Options include the history section, the natural sciences section, or a full tour. As the booking process may change, confirm your appointment in advance. The excursions offered by Centro de Interpretación Ambiental are for residents, tourists, schools, and organizations interested in nature conservation.
