Santiago Del Estero: Culture, Nature and Hotels
Accommodation in Santiago Del Estero
In Santiago Del Estero, places to visit range from historic museums and buildings to urban green spaces, river views and regional cuisine.
Museums, History and Architecture
The Centro Cultural del Bicentenario is a museum complex with three museums: the Museo Histórico “Dr. Oreste Di Lullo,” the Museo de Bellas Artes “Ramón Gómez Cornet” and the Museo de Ciencias Antropológicas y Naturales “Emilio y Duncan Wagner.” The complex therefore brings together diverse cultural subjects, from the city’s history and fine arts to anthropological and natural science collections.
The Museo Histórico presents the history of Santiago Del Estero chronologically. Its galleries display historic heritage that helps visitors understand important stages in the city’s development. The collections at the museum named after Emilio y Duncan Wagner cover archaeology, anthropology, ethnography, paleontology, botany, zoology and mineralogy. Together, they offer two distinct perspectives: a chronological overview of the city’s history and a broad, subject-based collection.
The architecture also offers contrasting styles. The historic building that houses part of the Centro Cultural del Bicentenario is designed in the French Neoclassical style. The Teatro 25 de Mayo follows the style of an opera house and opened on May 25, 1910. The Iglesia Catedral is considered the country’s first church and preserves colonial ornaments and relics.
The Santo Sudario is displayed in a side chapel of the Dominican Order’s temple at the Convento de Santo Domingo. The place where the Santo Sudario is kept is considered a pilgrimage site. The Parque del Encuentro, meanwhile, features replicas of five buildings representing the world’s major religions: a mosque, a synagogue, and a Catholic, Buddhist and Protestant temple. They are symbolically grouped around an amphitheater representing Pachamama.
Green Spaces, Trails and Panoramic Views
The Parque Aguirre is considered the city’s green lung and is ideal for walks among trees and gardens. A different experience awaits at Ashpa Kausay, a four-hectare urban nature reserve at the northern entrance to Santiago Del Estero. Visitors can observe native flora and fauna along its landscaped paths.
Two different vantage points offer panoramic views: The Puente Carretero provides views of the RĂo Dulce, its beaches and vegetation, and is considered a city landmark. The Mirador TurĂstico at the Complejo Juan Felipe offers a panoramic view of Santiago Del Estero. Together, they take in everything from the river landscape to views across the city.
The Parque del Encuentro also hosted the Festival Sustentable “Encuentro en el Parque”: its seventh edition featured recreational and educational activities for all age groups.
Regional Cuisine and Cultural Experiences
The Mercado ArmonĂa is a place to discover and enjoy regional cuisine and local products. At the publicly accessible cultural venue Indio Froilán, regional food is paired with music and folk dancing. Both local products and cultural offerings featuring music and dance are among the city’s attractions.
The Tren al Desarrollo connects the cities of Santiago and La Banda. A visit combines the region’s history and culture with biodiversity, architecture, innovation, science and technology. This experience differs from a visit to a single museum: it brings several subjects together in a regional tour.
