Lago Viedma – Hotels and Excursions
Accommodation in Lago Viedma
For a trip focused on Lago Viedma, activities by the lake and in the steppe go hand in hand with destinations in the Departamento Lago Argentino.
At Lago Viedma: Lake, Steppe and Trails
A 2022 article by the national government gave a depth of 900 meters for certain areas of Lago Viedma. Dunes lie along the lake’s shores, and Estancia La Estela offers horseback rides through the steppe and over the dunes. This activity depends on the estancia’s current operations.
Nearby, a 10-kilometer circular hiking trail from Estancia Helsingfors leads to the other Laguna Azul in the area. Another route goes from Parador La Leona to Seccional Moyano. You can explore the surrounding area on foot on the 10-kilometer loop from Estancia Helsingfors or along the route from Parador La Leona to Seccional Moyano.
The protected-area designation should also be understood regionally: the western areas of Lago Viedma and Lago Argentino are part of Los Glaciares National Park. This applies to those areas of the lakes, not generally to every place along their shores.
Hikes and Glacier Destinations in the Departamento Lago Argentino
El Chaltén is in the Departamento Lago Argentino and provides services for the Lago Viedma–Monte Fitz Roy area. From there, the 25-kilometer hike to Laguna de los Tres passes by Fitz Roy, also known as Chaltén; it takes 8 to 9 hours. The trail to Laguna Torre via Cerro Torre is 18 kilometers long and is an out-and-back route. Based on distance, this hike is shorter than the one to Laguna de los Tres. From the viewpoint at Laguna Torre, you can see Cerro Solo, Cordón Adela and the Cerro Torre massif.
Another destination near El Chaltén is Chorrillo del Salto: the waterfall is 6 kilometers from town, and the excursion takes half a day. You can also walk there. The hikes can therefore be compared by their different distances and the stated time required for each.
The broader travel region of the Departamento Lago Argentino also includes Los Glaciares National Park. It covers 726,927 hectares and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. At Moreno Glacier, a circular route of boardwalks and viewpoints runs for more than 4.5 kilometers and reaches the glacier front. Trekking with crampons and specialized guides is also offered on the ice of Perito Moreno Glacier.
Cabalgata Cristales is another regional horseback-riding experience: the three-hour tour follows the CordĂłn de los Cristales along the southern arm of Lago Argentino. An excursion on Lago Argentino goes to Spegazzini Glacier, where there is a trail, a shelter and viewpoints. For another way to get your bearings in the region, Puerto Punta Bandera is 47 kilometers from El Calafate and can be reached via the paved provincial roads RP 11 and RP 8.
Landscape and Culture in the Wider Travel Region
Reserva Provincial Lago del Desierto is a long, narrow lake surrounded by lenga and ñire forests and enclosed by mountains. Its landscape differs from the steppe and dune rides at Lago Viedma. Tres Lagos combines geological and cultural destinations: Piedra Clavada is a formation more than 20 meters high with views of the RĂo Shehuen; the area also has sites with petroglyphs and rock art.
A petrified forest 20 kilometers southeast of Tres Lagos is 90 million years old. Trees up to 90 meters tall have been preserved there standing upright. These destinations are part of the broader travel region of the Departamento Lago Argentino and offer a distinct regional selection alongside the trails and activities at Lago Viedma.
