Discover Barreal: Sports, Culture, and Wine
Accommodation in Barreal
Barreal combines activities in town with destinations for excursions in the Calingasta Department. Ruta Nacional 149 is the main access route for getting there. When planning, you can choose between sports activities, regional history, and natural attractions.
Activities and Culture in Barreal
The quiet roads in Barreal are ideal for cycling. Carrovelismo on the Pampa del Leoncito is considered the town’s favorite sport. Rafting trips of varying difficulty are offered on the RĂo Los Patos in Barreal; whether a trip is possible depends on the providers and river conditions.
The Museo Renzo Herrera houses objects related to regional history. The Centro Cultural serves as a tourist information center. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy wine tastings at Bodega Entre Tapias in Barreal. The town’s activities thus range from cycling and water sports to culture and wine.
The Pampa del Leoncito, also known as Barreal Blanco, is a plain in Barreal in the Calingasta Department. It is 12 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. Its name and measurements provide a precise reference for this landscape, which is also associated with carrovelismo.
Nature and Trails in the Calingasta Department
The Parque Nacional El Leoncito, part of the wider destination of the Calingasta Department, is about 34 kilometers from Barreal. The national park covers 89,900 hectares. Its landscapes include plains between sierras, high plateaus, mountain ridges, and small high-altitude oases. The park also has two hiking trails and viewpoints.
The trails vary in length and difficulty. The trail to Cerro Leoncito is 8 kilometers long, takes about 3 hours, and has a moderate to high difficulty level. The La Cantera Geological Trail offers a 4-kilometer option as well as an additional 6-kilometer option of moderate difficulty; ancient petroglyphs can be found along the trail. Check trail conditions before setting out.
A shorter option is the 500-meter trail to Cascada El RincĂłn. It has a low difficulty level and leads from the parking area to a natural viewing terrace overlooking the waterfall. Paisajes de agua is also rated as easy: it is a 1-kilometer trail along the El Leoncito stream. Look out for guinea pigs, foxes, various bird species, and guanacos; pumas may also be seen. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
More than 90 bird species can be observed in Parque Nacional El Leoncito, including the Andean condor, Andean mockingbird, variable hawk, long-tailed meadowlark, cinereous harrier, and Darwin’s rhea. Birdwatching offers a different way to experience nature than the trails described above. The CASLEO Observatory in the national park is also associated with stargazing in the Barreal tourist area.
Viewpoints and Stargazing
Two viewpoints in the Calingasta Department offer different perspectives. Mirador del Manzanar has a 360-degree panorama and is next to a historic apple orchard. Mirador del Cesco is a few meters from the entrance to Observatorio Cesco. It is higher than Mirador del Manzanar and offers a broader view that also includes the observatory.
Observatorio Cesco is open for daytime visits from Thursday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Night visits are possible with advance reservation via the website. Check visiting hours and make a reservation for night visits before your visit.
The specific differences can help you choose your excursions: the trail to Cascada El RincĂłn is 500 meters long, while the trail to Cerro Leoncito is around 8 kilometers and takes about 3 hours. In between are the options on the La Cantera Geological Trail and the 1-kilometer Paisajes de agua trail. You can plan your day around the stated distances and difficulty levels.
