Orán Department: Yungas, History and Culture
Accommodation in Orán Department
Orán Department appeals to travelers who want to include Yungas landscapes and cultural history in their trip. This lets you consider nature, urban history, and cultural attractions as distinct interests.
Yungas Forest and Protected Areas
Parque Provincial Laguna Pintascayo is located in Orán Department and protects 13,000 hectares of Yungas forest. It is a specific nature-focused destination for travelers interested in this forest region. Nearby is Parque Nacional Baritú, 34 kilometers from Aguas Blancas. It is Argentina’s only tropical national park and is considered one of the best-protected Yungas reserves in the world. Visitors can see tall trees and orchids there.
Hipólito Yrigoyen also offers its own regional connection to the landscape: the town is part of the Bermejo region, characterized by a subtropical climate and large rivers, and lies within the Yungas Biosphere Reserve. At Aguas Blancas, the Río Bermejo forms a natural border between Argentina and Bolivia. Sport fishing takes place along its entire course, among other activities. The route to San Andrés and the area around Orán offer opportunities for birdwatching and photo safaris.
History and Squares in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán
San Ramón de la Nueva Orán was founded on August 31, 1794, by Ramón García de León y Pizarro. Its name refers both to San Ramón Nonato and to the Algerian city of Orán. The city is considered the last one founded by the Spanish in the Americas. Its history can also be traced at the Iglesia Catedral: built in 1977 on the site of the historic Iglesia Matriz, which had been demolished five years earlier, it preserves the original, renovated tower.
Plaza General Pizarro has old trees, a fountain, and statues. Weekly cultural activities are held at Plaza San Martín, including the Feria de Manos Oranenses and the Feria de las Colectividades. Nearby, Plaza Santa Marta in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán is a landscaped green space for recreation that includes a monument honoring Indigenous peoples.
Museums, Culture, and Local Traditions
Near Orán Department, the Museo Regional de Orán preserves the city’s past and focuses on the history and archaeology of the surrounding area. Its significant collection includes objects from Indigenous cultures, artifacts from the colonial period, weapons of war, and items from the era of steam navigation on the Río Bermejo. These topics offer different ways to explore the region’s history.
In San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, the Casa de la Cultura offers workshops, an amphitheater, exhibition spaces, and a cinema. The Espacio-INCAA cinema screens 3D films and premieres at the same time as cinemas in other parts of Argentina and around the world. The library includes a Punto Digital with a cinema and a recreation room. Information about facilities may change; check the latest details before visiting.
Cultural traditions also include events and crafts. The folk festival Festi Orán commemorates the city’s founding and the patron saint festivities in honor of San Ramón Nonato. Its three evenings include the eve of the patron saint’s day and the evening after it; check the dates before your trip. The summer Corsos de Orán feature parades with local comparsas, murgas, tinkus, and traditional Bolivian Pim-Pim groups. Event schedules may also vary.
In Orán, crafts are made from Palo Santo, Guayacán, Quebracho, and Mistol wood, along with fabrics, bags, and belts made from the Chaguar plant fiber using traditional techniques. This adds another dimension to the area’s cultural profile alongside its squares, museums, and events.
