Salta: History, Culture and Views
Accommodation in Salta
Get to know Salta from different perspectives: historic buildings and museums tell the story of the city, while cable cars offer views of the city and hills. There are also folklore peñas with live music and regional cuisine. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you’re most interested in history, views, music, or culinary traditions.
Historic Sites and Museums
The Casona Histórica de Finca Castañares dates back to the early 18th century. On June 18, 1813, it housed General Belgrano’s troops; the Battle of Salta was planned there. Casona Finca Castañares is located in the northern, increasingly urbanized part of the city and is part of the Belgranian route, as well as Salta’s museums and historic monuments.
At the Casona de Castañares, a historical and cultural tour takes visitors through five rooms. Audiovisual projections complement the exhibition of objects, paintings, models, uniforms, replicas, photographs, and philatelic exhibits. The Museo Güemes has a different focus: its tour of ten rooms is designed with scenography and audiovisual elements and is dedicated to General Martín Miguel de Güemes and the struggle for emancipation.
The Museo Güemes is housed in a building in the heart of the city where the royal treasury of the Intendancy of Salta del Tucumán operated toward the end of the 18th century. Martín Miguel de Güemes also lived there with his family. The Museo de la Ciudad presents an exhibition on Salta’s history, featuring 18th- and 19th-century furniture, clothing, photographs, accessories, and objects from everyday life at the time. The images of the Lord and the Virgin of the Miracle, the city’s patron saints, are kept in the Catedral Basílica de Salta.
Views and Experiences in the City
There are two different cable car experiences for views over Salta. The Teleférico San Bernardo takes visitors to the summit in ten minutes and offers views of the city and its surroundings. The Teleférico Ala Delta connects the summit of Cerro San Bernardo with Cerro Ala Delta. Its panoramic route, more than a kilometer long, passes over Salta and the surrounding hills.
Music and historic spaces are also part of the cultural offerings. Traditional folklore peñas with live music can be found on Calle Balcarce. At the Museo San Francisco, the program includes an audiovisual 3D mapping show about the history of the Franciscan order and a nighttime tour of the oldest part of the San Francisco Monastery. If you plan to attend either, check the current schedule before your visit.
Regional Cuisine and Traditions
Salta’s culinary identity is shaped by an appreciation for traditional and time-honored products, regional cuisine, and the culinary heritage of immigrants. At the Experiencia Patio San Francisco, regional dishes and wines from the valleys are served in the historic courtyard of the Iglesia San Francisco. The cooking workshop “Cómo hacer tu propia humita” focuses on preparing the filling with typical ingredients for this traditional dish from Salta.
Gral. Martín Miguel de Güemes International Airport connects the city of Salta with the rest of the country and the world. The wider travel destination of Departamento Capital offers additional, distinct experiences. In San Lorenzo, Avenida Juan Carlos Dávalos, also known as “Camino a la Quebrada,” leads to Quebrada de San Lorenzo and features a distinctive variety of architectural styles.
