Cachí offers several clearly distinct themes to help you plan your trip: a colonial church, archaeological collections, a wine route and opportunities for hiking. If you’re looking for a hotel in Cachí, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. This lets you base your choice on specific themes, whether cultural history, archaeology, winemaking or hiking.

Church and archaeological history

The old church of Cachí was built in the 16th century and is recognized as an Argentine National Historic Monument. Its architectural features include roofs made from Cardón wood. Its construction period, monument status and materials offer different points of reference for understanding the church as a cultural attraction. By contrast, the Museo Arqueológico de Cachi «Pío Pablo Díaz» focuses on archaeological collections and their historical context.

The Museo Arqueológico de Cachi «Pío Pablo Díaz» was founded in 1969 based on archaeological collections donated by Pío Pablo Díaz. The archaeological materials come from the northern part of the Valle Calchaquí and are especially representative for interpreting pre-Hispanic history. The museum’s heritage reflects around 10,000 years of pre-Hispanic history in the Valle Calchaquí. This means the collection can be understood both in terms of its regional origins and the long span of history it covers. If you’re interested in archaeology, the focus here is on where the materials came from and their importance for understanding prehistory.

Wine route and hiking

From Cachí, you can travel along the Ruta del Vino de Altura. The route features vineyards growing grape varieties at elevations of more than 2,200 meters above sea level. Winemaking therefore offers a distinct focus alongside the church and archaeology: the emphasis is on grape varieties and the elevation at which they are grown. If you’d also like to include winemaking in your trip plans, the route offers a concrete option distinct from the cultural and historical themes.

Hiking can also be a factor in your choice. You can hike in the nearby Parque Nacional Los Cardones; hikes with local guides are also available in the area around the town. The two options differ in their points of reference: one takes place in the nearby national park, while the other consists of guided hikes around Cachí. This lets you choose the focus of your trip based on your interests without treating the two hiking options as the same.

Archaeological sites in the Departamento Cachi

The broader travel destination of Departamento Cachi includes Potrero de Payogasta and Las Pailas among its archaeological sites. Potrero de Payogasta has been part of the Camino Ancestral Andino Qhapaq Ñan project since 2008. The site is divided into several areas: Casa del Curaca is in the south. In the center are a ceremonial plaza with an Ushnu, or altar, restored in 2011, and two large round Kollkas, or silos. In the north is a Kallanka, a rectangular hall with an 8 m-high gable. This layout allows you to consider the ceremonial plaza, silos and hall as distinct parts of the site.

Las Pailas is considered one of the most important agricultural sites in the northern Valle Calchaquí. The archaeological site in the Departamento de Cachí covers around 500 hectares of agricultural land. It includes pre-Hispanic cultivated fields and a residential area where workers lived and processed the fields’ produce. The agricultural theme therefore includes both cultivation and residential and processing areas. Las Pailas offers a different focus for understanding the region’s archaeology than the layout of Potrero de Payogasta.
