San Ignacio Department offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: Jesuit sites, museums, protected landscapes and cultural events. Depending on your interests, you can explore historic and cultural landmarks, go hiking or spend time by the water.

Jesuit Heritage in San Ignacio and Corpus Christi

The Conjunto Jesuítico Guaraní de San Ignacio Miní offers guided tours of the site, an interpretation center and a museum. The sound and light show is also held there. The urban layout of San Ignacio Miní was completed in 1696; UNESCO declared the site a World Heritage Site in 1984. The site's architectural development and its later World Heritage designation thus represent distinct historical milestones.

The Conjunto Jesuítico Guaraní de Corpus Christi offers an interpretation center with a museum and an interpretive trail through woodland. Visitors can explore the site's history along the trail with specialized guides. The Jesuit mission of Corpus Christi was founded in 1622 and, after several relocations within the same area, reached its final location in 1701. Because of its strategic location, Corpus Christi was historically devoted primarily to yerba mate production. The complex was known as a yerba mate producer and had its own port and shipyard.

Nature Reserves and Outdoor Activities

Surrounded by greenery near San Ignacio, the Reserva Natural Osununú is a protected natural area belonging to Fundación Temaikèn. It is considered an ecotourism destination in the south of Misiones Province and is part of the provincial system of protected areas. Since 2016, the reserve has had a management plan approved by the Misiones Province Ministry of the Environment. It covers 168 hectares and borders the 78-hectare Parque Provincial Teyú Cuaré. Together, the two areas form a place of biological, geological, historical and cultural value.

The nearby Parque Provincial Teyú Cuaré is a nature reserve on the Paraná River, established to protect a striking rocky outcrop. Moderate hiking trails lead to viewpoints overlooking the Paraná River and the coast of Paraguay. The park also has an information center, a camping area, restrooms and signs. Its viewpoints and trails offer a specific reason to include nature and scenery in your travel plans.

There are also options by the water: the coast of San Ignacio has a beach and two bathing areas. The bathing areas offer paid admission, camping facilities and access for motorhomes. Water sports and beach activities are also available along the coast.

In Jardín América, events celebrate a range of cultural themes. Akimatsuri takes place every year in April and features Eisa dances from Okinawa, performances by the local Taiko group Ryujin Daiko, Yosakoi and Japanese food. The program may vary. On Sundays, Domingos Culturales takes place in Plaza Colón, featuring musicians, artisans and local business owners. The Casa de la Cultura organizes exhibitions, workshops, performances and community gatherings.

The Fiesta Provincial de las Raíces is a November celebration where Polish, Ukrainian, German, Brazilian, Paraguayan, Italian and other communities present traditional dances, music, clothing and food. Plaza Colón's design is also described in detail: Fernando Juan Dasso designed it in 1967, and its layout combines concentric squares with diagonals at 45-degree angles. The Parroquia Cristo Redentor in Jardín América was built between 1964 and 1967 and has 58 polychrome stained-glass windows with a total area of 125 m².
