San Rafael Department: History, Water and Wine
Accommodation in San Rafael Department
In front of the Museo Ferroviario in San Rafael stands locomotive 315, named “La Constructora.” It was used in the construction of the San Martín railway line and is now considered an important relic of that era. San Rafael Department thus offers a tangible way to explore its cultural history; historic buildings, museums, waterscapes and wine-related themes also shape the travel experience.
History and Museums
Villa 25 de Mayo is considered the historic heart of San Rafael Department. Its fort is designated an Argentine National Historic Monument. The Museo Histórico Narciso Sosa Morales displays archaeological pieces as well as objects related to the history of local pioneers and Indigenous communities. Another historic site is the Ruina del Fuerte de San Rafael del Diamante, where the remains of towers, foundations and paved floors survive in a distinctive arrangement.
The Museo Histórico Militar San Rafael displays a scale model of a barracks belonging to the 7th Cavalry Regiment. Music, lighting and a narrator accompany the presentation. The Espacio Contemporáneo de Arte in San Rafael exhibits works by artists from Mendoza, as well as prominent artists from Argentina and Latin America. Those interested in different forms of expression will find an introduction to visual art here, alongside the history museums.
The Parque de los Niños in San Rafael offers another way to spend time outdoors. Its amenities include more than 60 play features and an adventure playground.
Landscape and Water Activities
The Cañón del Atuel was formed over millions of years by erosion from the Río Atuel and the effects of wind. In a different natural setting lies the Reserva Laguna del Atuel, one of the two protected natural areas currently found in San Rafael Department. The landscape around El Nihuil also has a distinctive character, with dunes reaching up to 200 meters in height.
The places by the water offer a range of activities. The Los Reyunos dam is 134 meters high, and the Valle Grande reservoir offers catamaran rides. You can go windsurfing and kitesurfing on Lake El Nihuil, while the El Nihuil reservoir is suitable for sport fishing. Embalse Agua del Toro is known for outdoor activities and its importance for sport fishing; its scenic beauty is also part of its character.
You can reach Salinas del Diamante by private car via National Route 144 or by joining an excursion. Check route information before setting out.
Wine and Regional Cuisine
The Caminos del Vino in San Rafael include winery visits, walks through vineyards, insights into winemaking and tastings. The grape varieties mentioned include Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet and Bonarda. This offers a way to discover wine not only through tastings, but also by learning about its cultivation and production.
Laberinto de Borges offers a different culinary experience: set amid a park, it features traditional Creole dishes, including Carne a la masa. Together with the wineries, it provides a choice of experiences for different culinary interests, without suggesting that both offer the same kind of experience.
