Luján de Cuyo combines its connections to wine with local history and a range of topics related to water and landscapes. When planning your stay, it helps to make a distinction: the history of the Ciudad district and the Circuito del Agua relate to Luján de Cuyo itself; wine experiences and several nature and sports activities are in the wider region. This lets you decide what to focus on during your trip without conflating the places and experiences.

A wine region with its own character

In the wider region, Luján de Cuyo is among the world’s most significant wine tourism regions. The region is known worldwide as Tierra del Malbec; moreover, D.O.C. Luján de Cuyo was the first controlled designation of origin in the Americas. Numerous wineries along the Rutas del Vino offer tours, wine tastings and gastronomic experiences. The name and the designation of origin represent different aspects of the region’s wine profile: its Malbec identity and the historic distinction of its designation of origin. When planning your trip, you can choose what to focus on depending on whether you’re particularly interested in tours, tastings or the culinary side. All three experiences are located in the wider region.

History in the Ciudad district

The Ciudad district of Luján de Cuyo grew from a small village established around a religious sanctuary on May 11, 1855. The original chapel of the Virgen de Luján stood on the west side of what is now Plaza Departamental; the municipal building is there today. These local landmarks bring together the district’s early history and the present-day municipal use of the plaza area.

The Circuito del Agua is another local attraction: this complete, self-guided route presents Luján de Cuyo’s water-related heritage. For a different kind of route, there is the full-day Circuito Cacheuta–Potrerillos. It starts at Plaza de Luján de Cuyo and follows Ruta 82 to the Informador Turístico de Potrerillos. The two experiences are therefore quite different: the Circuito del Agua focuses on presenting local water heritage on a self-guided tour, while the Circuito Cacheuta–Potrerillos has a full-day format, a defined route and a named endpoint. Check locally in advance to find out whether the route is currently available.

Landscapes and activities in the wider area

Potrerillos lies at the foot of the Cordón del Plata and in the heart of Luján de Cuyo. Its landscape includes mountains, ravines and rivers. In the wider region, Parque Provincial Cordón del Plata is home to glaciers, a diverse range of wildlife and plant life, and Cerro El Plata. These natural features offer a different focus for a trip than local history and wine experiences.

Water sports are also available in the region: Dique Potrerillos is used for kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing, diving and kayaking. Dique El Carrizal, in the south of the Departamento de Luján, offers a different experience. It is a recreation and sports area with campgrounds and clubs for motorized water sports and sport fishing. Your options therefore offer different ways to focus your trip: winery tours and tastings in the wider area, water heritage in the Ciudad district, or nature and sports in the region. These descriptions of regional experiences refer to different places and activities, not to a single excursion destination.
