El Condado: Village History and Activities

El Condado is a rural village with adobe architecture on old buildings. The first settlers of Villa Castelli made their home here. At the summit of El Condado stands the Capilla de la Virgen de la Merced, an important place of worship. With its religious significance, the chapel offers a different focus from the village’s architectural heritage.

In El Condado, you can go for walks, bike rides, and horseback rides. The activities differ mainly in how you get around: you can explore the area on foot, by bike, or on horseback. This lets you choose according to your interests.

Archaeology and Historic Waterworks

Cerro El Toro Reserve is a protected archaeological and natural site. It preserves significant remains of the Aguada culture, including petroglyphs, terraces, galleries, and stone corrals. The range of surviving traces makes the connection between archaeology and nature a defining feature of this place.

El Túnel is another point of interest: a historic waterworks system built to supply the region with drinking water. Canals, sluices, and other structures remain in the El Túnel area; they illustrate the importance of the system to water distribution in the department. Unlike the archaeological remains at Cerro El Toro, the focus here is on water management infrastructure.

Quebrada del Yeso and Scenic Route

The route through Quebrada del Yeso is approximately 50 kilometers long. A paved road leads to the quebrada via El Condado; from there, the route branches off into the riverbed. If you continue along the track, it connects with the road to Laguna Brava. Road conditions may change, so check them before your trip.

Another scenic highlight is La Bajada, a natural formation of sedimentary rock. It is part of the Villa Castelli adventure circuit, offering a different perspective from the historic structures and archaeological traces.

Dated Events in Villa Castelli

Two events are scheduled for 2026 at the visitor center of the Cerro El Toro heritage site, on National Route No. 76, kilometer 154, in Villa Castelli. “Villa Castelli en Bici” is planned as a bicycle tour from September 6 to December 31. It combines cycling with history, striking landscapes, and living culture. The Mercado Cultural will take place at the same visitor center from September 4 to December 31, 2026. It therefore starts two days earlier; both events end on December 31. Check the event dates before your trip.
