Chilecito brings together industrial and mining history, archaeological sites, culture and mountain scenery. Estación Nº 1 del Cable Carril and Museo Dr. Santiago Bazán form a museum site connected with the mining history of La Mejicana and Chilecito. The station is also the starting point of the monumental Cable Carril. Here, a look at mining history goes hand in hand with an introduction to the Cable Carril.

Mining History and Archaeology

TamberĂa del Inca is an archaeological site in the heart of Chilecito and has been declared a National Historic Monument. The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn TamberĂa del Inca presents original pieces and the history of the Diaguita and Inca peoples in the region. The site and interpretation center offer different perspectives: the former on archaeological heritage, the latter on regional history, presented through original pieces.

Samay Huasi, Joaquín V. González’s retreat house, is a cultural center that brings together literature, landscape and intellectual heritage. This extends the cultural range from mining and archaeological themes to a literary and landscape perspective.

Panoramic Views and Orientation

Cristo del Portezuelo is located in the center of Chilecito and is a viewpoint with panoramic views. From there, Chilecito appears nestled among the mountains; the 360-degree view takes in valleys and mountains. This gives the site a different focus from the museums and archaeological sites: here, the landscape takes center stage. There are food and drink options and artisan stalls nearby. If you plan to visit them, check what is available on your chosen date before you go.

Trekking and Cycling

Vuelta al Pique features trekking, mining ruins, rivers, canyons and chapels tucked between hills. The Copa Cable Carril cycling route is in the heart of Chilecito and combines sporting excitement with striking landscapes.

The distinction is clear when choosing an activity: Vuelta al Pique combines trekking with a variety of landscape and cultural features, while Copa Cable Carril is a cycling route. You can therefore consider these options according to their respective focus, without treating them as the same as the cultural sites or the viewpoint.

Culture and Landscape in the Chilecito Department

The cultural offerings of the Chilecito Department include the Church of San Buenaventura in Vichigasta. It is considered the oldest church in the department and dates to the mid-17th century. Its original single-nave layout preserves thick adobe walls and a wooden roof structure made of rafters and purlins. The church is part of the Circuito de las Capillas and was declared a National Historic Monument in 1997 under Law 24.852.

The Cuesta de Miranda offers another regional perspective: this 114-kilometer stretch of Ruta 40 connects Chilecito with Gral. Felipe Varela. Views of the valley and the RĂo Miranda open up between narrow, deeply cut rocky gorges. This route description complements the city views from Cristo del Portezuelo with a landscape perspective from the Chilecito Department.
