San Martín Department: Jesuit Heritage and Nature Around Iberá
Accommodation in San Martín Department
For your trip to San Martín Department, different interests come together: the legacy of the Jesuit missions in La Cruz and Yapeyú, and nature and water activities around Iberá. If you are looking for a hotel, the places and themes at the heart of your trip can help guide your choice.
Jesuit Heritage in La Cruz
In La Cruz, relics, archaeological remains, anthropological elements, and ruins of the old Jesuit missions have been declared part of the historical and cultural heritage under Argentine Law 25.117. The sundial in La Cruz is also among the historical features whose preservation is provided for by the law. The ancient Jesuit walls are tangible evidence of the town’s past and belonged to a reduction founded by Jesuit missionaries and Guaraní peoples.
Another notable building is the Iglesia Antigua. It was one of the 30 Jesuit pueblos and was founded in 1629. Its patronal celebrations on August 15 end with a Mass. The Luminarias offer a glimpse into another aspect of historical daily life: hollowed-out stone blocks from the colonial period were used to light the town’s streets with burning fat or tallow. Together, these sites and objects offer different ways to explore the history of the missions—from architectural remains to a concrete example of earlier street lighting.
Yapeyú and Its Museums
In Yapeyú, the Templete Casa Natal Gral. San Martín preserves the ruins of the house where José Francisco de San Martín was born on February 25, 1778. It is Yapeyú’s main tourist attraction, surrounded by an extensive park and located in a particularly scenic spot on the Río Uruguay.
The museums also focus on different subjects. The Museo Padre Furlong displays floors and column bases. The Museo de Cultura Jesuítica “R. P. Guillermo Furlong S.J.” is dedicated to Indigenous peoples and the peoples governed by the Jesuits. The Museo Histórico Sanmartiniano exhibits Jesuit archaeological objects as well as original pieces recovered from the former reduction. In Yapeyú, you can thus encounter both the memory of San Martín and tangible evidence of the Jesuit era.
Nature and Activities Around Iberá
Parque Nacional y Provincial Iberá offers numerous trails through a range of natural environments, including grasslands, forested areas, and the shores of wetlands. The activity area at Portal Laguna Iberá includes trails through gallery forests and boardwalks over Laguna Iberá. Boat trips and kayak excursions are offered in Colonia Carlos Pellegrini. These options cover different nature and water activities, so plan your trip based on which ones interest you most.
In Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, the Centro de Interpretación Iberá Salvaje helps visitors learn about nature, history, and culture before exploring the Esteros del Iberá. The center presents information about Iberá’s unique ecosystems, flora and fauna, and the importance of these ecosystems within the global ecosystem. Indigenous peoples and the influence of European colonization are also among the topics covered. This can provide a deeper understanding of the region before you set out on the trails or take part in water activities.
Getting to the Portal and Nearby Destinations
From Mercedes, Portal Laguna Iberá is accessible via Ruta Provincial 40. The route is 120 km long: 50 km on asphalt and 70 km on compacted gravel. Road conditions may change due to weather or roadworks, so check them before setting off. This gives you both the distance and the stated road surface to factor into your plans.
Near La Cruz is Reserva Natural Paraje Tres Cerros, approximately 27 km away. Depending on the circuit you choose, it can be reached via Provincial Routes 114 or 119. The approximate distance and the two roads mentioned offer a practical point of reference, without implying a specific journey time.
Events can also play a role in planning your trip. Festival del Yaguareté Correntino brings together culture, gastronomy, identity, and nature conservation. It takes place annually at different locations; Carlos Pellegrini hosted the second edition. As the location of future editions may change, check the dates and venue for the year of your trip.
