Discover Ituzaingó Department
Accommodation in Ituzaingó Department
Cultural history, recurring festivals and nature experiences shape Ituzaingó Department. In Ituzaingó, museums offer insights into early cultures and the city’s development; at Portal Cambyretá and on the Apipé Islands, wildlife watching and landscapes shape the experience. The more than 15 kilometers of beaches along the Paraná River are also part of the destination’s appeal.
Museums and history in Ituzaingó
Founded in 2005, the Museo Antropológico de Ituzaingó preserves, displays and honors representative elements of earlier cultures. Of its six exhibition rooms, the first is devoted to toponymy, zoogeography and phytogeography, pre-colonial mapping, and the Guaraní geographic area. It also displays japepo vessels, which were used to store and preserve food. The second room contains Guaraní lithic material from excavations in the Yacyretá area of Ituzaingó Department.
The Museo Histórico Gobernador Manuel Ignacio Lagraña offers a different perspective: it illustrates urban life, the development and institutional history of Ituzaingó up to the installation of the Yacyretá Dam. The Yacyretá hydroelectric power station on the Paraná River was built by Argentina and Paraguay. Together, the two museums offer different perspectives—from earlier cultures and their material remains to the city’s history and development.
Festivals and cultural traditions
Celebrations in honor of the city’s patron saint, San Juan Bautista, begin each year on June 15 with the Rezo de la Aurora and the novena. On June 24, a procession carrying the saint’s image through the city streets is followed by a Mass attended by the bishop. The patronal celebration also includes a craft and trade fair featuring products by local and regional artisans and entrepreneurs, food offerings, and children’s and traditional games.
Other festivals have their own distinctive character. At the Fiesta Nacional de la Yerra y la Doma Correntina, more than 200 gauchos in traditional clothing and on decorated horses ride through the center of Ituzaingó. The celebration has grown from a festival that was originally local into an event that attracts visitors from Argentina and abroad. The Carnavales de Ituzaingó, in turn, feature comparsas and groups with themed designs, floats, costumes and choreography. Their parades take place at the Corsódromo on Avenida 9 de Julio and Paraná.
Paseo Los Pioneros is dedicated to engineers Gamberale and Mernoz, who were among the early explorers of the Paraná River. The Apipé Islands offer another glimpse into cultural traditions: handicrafts, regional cuisine and customs of island life reflect the culture of the islands.
River, islands and wildlife watching
At Portal Cambyretá, you can observe wildlife, including from a vehicle. Waterbirds that can be seen there include storks, roseate spoonbills and herons. The area around Portal Cambyretá is characterized by low-lying areas prone to flooding. On Apipé Grande, birdwatching and interpretive walks are offered. The island’s natural areas include sandy beaches, lagoons, gallery forests and grasslands, and are notable for their rich biodiversity. Check local conditions and arrangements for activities before your trip.
The beaches of Ituzaingó lie along the Paraná River and extend for more than 15 kilometers; they are described as “habilitated,” which does not confirm current public access. Check the conditions for the relevant season before visiting. Those interested in fishing will find a variety of methods in Ituzaingó: spinning, fly fishing, float fishing and bottom fishing. Check the local regulations in force before fishing.
Fishing and events
The Concurso Integración de Pesca del Surubí con Devolución takes place in Ituzaingó every year. The program includes a shore fishing tournament aimed at the whole family. This makes the event program distinct from fishing as an activity in its own right: the competition centers on shore fishing, while the different fishing methods also offer guidance to those interested in fishing independently.
