Villa Tulumba: Architecture and History
Villa Tulumba is designated a Poblado HistĂłrico Nacional (National Historic Settlement). Cobblestone streets, old streetlamps and historic houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries shape the town’s appearance. Some individual buildings are also classified nationally as cultural heritage sites: the Antigua Capilla is considered archaeological heritage, while the Casa de los ReynafĂ© and Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario are considered historic heritage. The Edificio de PolicĂa and Escuela Obispo-Olegario Correa are designated architectural heritage sites. The Tala de Esquiu, designated a historic tree, stands in Plaza Granadero Márquez.
The Antigua Capilla was built in the final years of the 17th century in honor of the SantĂsima Virgen del Rosario. It was built on land donated by Don Antonio de Ataide, considered the area’s first settler. Construction of the Santuario Mariano Diocesano de Nuestra Señora del Rosario began in 1882 and was completed in 1892. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario houses an old Baroque-style tabernacle and paintings by MartĂn Santiago. El Tabernáculo is a work of art carved from a single piece of Paraguayan cedar and painted with gold leaf.
The Camino Real offers further insights into the area’s history: Villa Tulumba is part of this old route, once the main connection between Upper Peru and the Viceroyalty of the RĂo de la Plata. Behind the church, the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del Antiguo Camino Real explains the route and offers interactive tourist and cultural information. This includes infographics, timelines, cinema rooms and a multimedia room with touchscreens. If you’re planning a visit, check the latest visitor information. The Casa de los ReynafĂ© is also connected to the area’s history: the Barranca Yaco massacre, in which General Facundo Quiroga was murdered in 1835, was planned there.
Trails, Views and Religious Traditions
The RĂo Suncho crosses Villa Tulumba from west to east; its banks are suitable for walking, horseback riding and cycling. A walk from Villa Tulumba west to the Ermita del Cerro takes no more than an hour. The Ermita is about five kilometers from Villa Tulumba and was built in 1945 on one of the highest peaks in the area. Its sanctuary is home to the Virgen del Cerro statue, carved from a single block of stone. The elevated Pasarela de Ingreso offers views across all of Villa Tulumba.
Religious and cultural traditions are also part of the visitor experience. The rosary is prayed at the Gruta de Lourdes on the 11th of each month. Peñas and festivals take place at Plazoleta Granadero JosĂ© Márquez during Semana de Tulumba. Cuatro Esquinas, in the historic center, is a popular meeting place that has inspired works by several visual artists. The Cristo de los Granaderos is considered the country’s first religious monument. It honors the Granaderos a Caballo of General San MartĂn who fell in the Battle of San Lorenzo, including JosĂ© Márquez from Tulumba.
