Almafuerte lies on the shore of Lake Piedras Moras. The lake and river shape the range of activities, while the Museo AntropolĂłgico Regional Camiare provides a distinct cultural focus. The following places and routes offer concrete starting points.

Museum and traces of the railway era

The Museo Antropológico Regional Camiare is located in Almafuerte’s former railway station and presents ten thousand years of history across three rooms. In the “Nuevos Pobladores” room, it displays telephones, telegraphs, signaling equipment, staff block instruments and railway lamps from the railway era. The collection also includes megafauna specimens, mostly glyptodonts, as well as tools from the region’s early cultures. In this way, traces of the railway era sit alongside finds and objects connected to the region’s early history.

According to the city administration, Casa del Fundador is also part of Almafuerte’s historical and cultural heritage. Together with the museum, it offers another point of interest if you are interested in the city’s history and cultural heritage.

Walking trails by the lake and river

Aguada de Pájaros is a 1.91-kilometer loop along the banks of the Río Ctalamochita in Almafuerte’s Balneario. The Circuito Turístico Natural – Almafuerte runs along the shore of Lake Piedras Moras and past the Balneario. Both routes offer a connection to the water, but focus on different geographic areas.

The Casa de Piedra + Acueducto hiking trail connects old roads and new paths, stream crossings, the former Usina Casa de Piedra, Dique Piedras Moras, the river mouth and the Canal Molina aqueduct, which is over 130 years old. Unlike the 1.91-kilometer Aguada de Pájaros loop, this route description includes several paths, crossings and historic structures. The aqueduct and the former Usina provide distinctive points of interest along the way.

Kayaking, diving and activities on the lake

The guided Casa de Piedra kayak route runs along the southern shore of Dique Piedras Moras to the former Usina Casa de Piedra. The also-guided Desembocadura Arroyo Soconcho route follows the northern shore to the mouth of Arroyo Soconcho and passes submerged forests. The two kayak routes therefore differ both in which shore they follow and in their respective destinations.

The submerged village of El Salto is associated with Dique Piedras Moras. Usina La Cascada is also submerged: the three-story building dates from 1914 and was built in a typically English architectural style. Pedal boat rides are also available on Lake Piedras Moras. Personalized intensive courses are available for windsurfing.

Birdwatching and planning your routes

The Circuito Barrancas runs along the eastern beaches of Lake Piedras Moras and offers opportunities to observe otters, turtles and birds. Birdwatching is considered an inclusive ecotourism activity in Almafuerte and is possible in almost every part of the city. It is therefore not limited to a single loop.

The municipal “Mejor en Bici” program provides ten bicycles for tourists to borrow for the walking trails. If you want to use this service when planning your trip, check availability before you travel. This will help you decide whether to focus your time on the museum’s exhibits, a trail along the river or lake, a guided kayak route or wildlife watching.
