Ciénaga de Allende: Chapel History and Trails
Accommodation in Ciénaga de Allende
Ciénaga de Allende combines a datable history of the Sacred Heart Chapel with trails that pass historic sites. For planning your trip, the town offers several points of interest: sacred architecture, the 1885 cemetery, and trekking in the surrounding area. Provincial Route 307 is a useful reference point for the town’s location.
The history of the Sacred Heart Chapel
The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began as a small oratory dedicated to the Sacred Heart. It has been documented in the parish registers of San Alberto since September 26, 1874. On October 28, 1878, Pedro and Feliciano Allende donated seven blocks of land to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the construction of a church and a settlement in its vicinity. The chapel was completed in 1882.
Its history did not follow a straight course: in 1890, the small church lay in ruins and had to be closed. Cura Brochero rebuilt it. The sequence from the early oratory to the land donation and subsequent rebuilding makes the Sacred Heart Chapel a distinctive subject for anyone interested in local history during their stay.
Chapel and cemetery
The chapel consists of a single nave. This simple layout is a concrete architectural point of reference when learning about the building. The Ciénaga de Allende cemetery was built in 1885, adding another historic site with a documented date to the town’s history. Each structure has its own year and they should not be understood as a single construction project.
The Sendero Cuesta de Altautina also passes by the Sacred Heart Chapel and the cemetery. This means you encounter these sites not only in connection with the town’s history, but also in descriptions of a longer trekking route.
Trails and the stories behind them
The Sendero Cuesta de Altautina is 30 kilometers long, designed as a full-day trekking route, and rated as moderate in difficulty. It follows the path to Cascada La Gloria and passes Pozo del Algarrobo, as well as the cemetery and Sacred Heart Chapel in Ciénaga de Allende. Its length, full-day duration, and difficulty rating give you a concrete basis for deciding whether to include this route in your trip plans.
Another trail story is connected with the fifth youth pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Santo Cura Brochero. The participants gathered in Ciénaga de Allende and walked together along the Camino de la Gloria to Cura Brochero, covering a total of 25 kilometers. This route is part of the account of the pilgrimage and should be distinguished from the 30-kilometer Cuesta de Altautina trekking route.
Rock paintings and excursions in the surrounding area
At Cerro San José, a short distance from Ciénaga de Allende along the road to Altautina, natural rock overhangs with rock paintings can be found. Here, the landscape and cultural traces come together: the overhangs are natural formations, while the rock paintings have their own historical significance.
Nearby, the Cascada y Cerro La Gloria excursion includes a section by bicycle, walks along the stream, and a climb up Cerro La Gloria. Cascada de La Gloria lies on the stream of the same name, at the foot of Cerro La Gloria, along the road to Ciénaga de Allende. The area therefore offers a variety of activities: a trekking route with a specified full-day duration, a historic pilgrimage, and an excursion involving cycling, walking, and a climb.
Planning your stay
Ciénaga de Allende is located on Provincial Route 307. When planning your stay by theme, you can distinguish between the town’s historical attractions and the trails and excursion destinations in the surrounding area. If you mainly want to include the Sacred Heart Chapel and the cemetery in your trip, their history is connected with the Cuesta de Altautina route. For a longer trekking plan, the route’s 30-kilometer length and full-day duration are especially relevant.
