Accommodation in Guardia Vieja
Guardia Vieja can be explored through two themes: the history of the railway station and school of the same name, and the nearby Laguna La Chanchera. These offer different points of focus for your stay: historical context in the town or the landscape and uses of the lagoon. When looking for a hotel in Guardia Vieja, you can use these interests as a starting point and consider whether local history or the surrounding natural environment will play a greater role in your stay.
Railway and School History in Guardia Vieja
EstaciĂłn Guardia Vieja is a railway station in the town of the same name in the Departamento de Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña, CĂłrdoba Province. It is on the San MartĂn line between Laboulaye and CurapaligĂĽe. It was opened in 1886 by the Buenos Aires al PacĂfico railway company. On October 8, 1886, the Guardia Vieja and Riobamba stations also began operating, when the Villa Mercedes section entered public service.
The station has no passenger service; freight trains operated by the state-owned company Trenes Argentinos Cargas run on its tracks. Because operating information can change, check the current situation before planning to use the station for your journey.
The station’s name also carries a historical dimension. It recalls the skirmish of February 4, 1817, associated with General Gregorio Las Heras and JosĂ© de San MartĂn. This connection in the name reaches further back in time than the station’s opening and adds an older historical memory to the railway story.
Escuela Fiscal de Guardia Vieja took its name from the local railway station. In 1933, the appointment of the first teacher by Córdoba Province formalized the school’s operation. The school’s history is thus connected to the town’s history in two ways: through its adoption of the station’s name and through a specific step in the school’s operation.
In 1943, the Artaza heirs donated the half-hectare plot on which the school building was constructed. The school also used a hall that served as both a chapel and a dance hall. In addition to its educational function, the space therefore had other religious and community uses.
Laguna La Chanchera Nearby
Laguna La Chanchera lies near Guardia Vieja. It covers approximately 600 hectares and is surrounded by vegetation, fauna, and flora of ecological value. It is designated as a nature reserve in the Departamento de Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña. The area figure conveys the lagoon’s approximate size; the designation identifies its protected status.
The lagoon has been used for water sports and sport fishing; at the same time, there have been periods when the site was neglected. If either activity is important for your visit, check in advance whether it is currently possible. This lets you include the lagoon as a nature-focused part of your plans while recognizing that the uses mentioned do not guarantee current availability.
