San Marcos Sierra combines viewpoints and river landscapes with historic buildings, squares and regional cuisine. When planning your stay, you can choose from several focuses: a climb, a riverside swimming spot, historic sites in the center or regional products. Some destinations are in town, while others are nearby. This gives you a practical guide for planning your days and looking for a hotel.

Viewpoints and Horseback Rides

Cerro de la Cruz has a viewpoint overlooking San Marcos Sierras and the Río San Marcos gorge. The climb takes 30 minutes and is easy to moderately difficult. The viewpoint at Cerro Alfa is within the town limits of San Marcos Sierras; the climb is moderately difficult. If time is a factor, Cerro de la Cruz offers a specific time frame with its 30-minute climb. You can assess Cerro Alfa based on its moderate difficulty.

Nearby, local guides offer horseback rides to the historic mill on the banks of the Río San Marcos. The mill is two kilometers from town. The guided ride thus takes you to a historic destination on the riverbank.

Rivers and Swimming Spots

San Marcos Sierras is a protected natural area with the Río San Marcos, which shares its name. The balneario on the Río San Marcos is a swimming spot just a few meters from the central Plaza Cacique Tulián. The Río Quilpo is another option for swimming: it is about four kilometers from San Marcos Sierras and has shallow swimming areas as well as deeper pools. Its banks include rocky stretches and small sandy beaches. This gives you two options for planning: a swimming spot near the central plaza and a more distant river landscape with different swimming areas.

Squares, Buildings and Culture

The historic chapel of San Marcos Sierras dates from 1734, is built of stone and adobe, and stands opposite Plaza Cacique Tulián. The plaza hosts a craft fair, which stands out among old colonial-style buildings and colorful façades. The Feria Comunitaria is on the Río San Marcos, one block from the plaza. At the Túneles Vegetales, wild trees form a canopy over the paths, where craftspeople and local producers have stalls.

The Museo del Pueblo is housed in the Casa de Cultura Marcelo Pais, on the corner of Calle Mariano Moreno and Calle Los Algarrobos. It is intended to permanently protect, preserve and publicly display archaeological finds and artworks owned by the municipal government. Nearby, the Museo Hippie displays objects related to the counterculture movement that emerged in the 1960s.

Regional Cuisine and Honey

San Marcos Sierras was declared the provincial capital of honey, and organic honey is produced there. The flavor of local Serrano honey is associated with the blossoms of the plants from which it comes. El Árbol is a beekeeping theme park that adds a dedicated attraction to the area’s honey identity.

Recommended regional food and drinks include cabrito, carne en bolsa and lemonade with honey. Other recommendations include algarroba mousse and algarroba flan, as well as ice cream in flavors from the monte, including algarroba, chañar, blackberry and fig. The selection thus ranges from savory dishes to honey drinks and desserts with regional flavors.
