Punta Delgada brings together the history of a lighthouse and seasonal wildlife watching. The Faro Punta Delgada began operating in 1905. While this date places the Faro in its historical context, southern elephant seal watching at Punta Delgada is concentrated mainly between September and April.

Lighthouse and Protected Area

The Faro Punta Delgada was included in the Centennial Lighthouses system under Law No. 26,650. The Reserva Natural de la Defensa Faro Punta Delgada also includes infrastructure classified as a National Historic Monument under Law No. 12,665 because it belongs to the Centennial Lighthouses system. Punta Delgada is also one of the operational units of the Península Valdés protected area.

The Reserva Natural de la Defensa Faro Punta Delgada covers about 550 hectares and lies on the boundary of the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés, a World Heritage Site. This brings specific heritage protection for infrastructure together with a connection to a larger protected area at the same location. Both forms of protection complement the history of the lighthouse, which began operating in 1905.

Wildlife Watching and Seasonal Highlights

Southern elephant seals can be watched at Punta Delgada mainly between September and April. The site is also a strategic observation point for birds and marine fauna. Wildlife officers assist visitors and monitor the proper conduct of tourist activities. Staffing may change.

Getting There from Puerto Pirámides

From Puerto Pirámides, the route to Punta Delgada follows gravel roads. Punta Delgada is located within a radius of about 75 km from there. Check road conditions and practical driving times before setting out, as these may change.

Biedma Natural Environment

In the Biedma destination, the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés covers 887,775 hectares of Patagonian steppe, plains, and plateau landscapes. The area figures refer to different protected areas: about 550 hectares for the Reserva Natural de la Defensa Faro Punta Delgada and 887,775 hectares for the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés. Its Ramsar wetlands include Golfo San José and Golfo Nuevo, which provide feeding and resting grounds for resident and migratory birds. The Reserva de Biosfera Península Valdés includes the protected areas of Península Valdés, Punta Loma, and Punta León.

UNESCO describes Península Valdés as an area of global significance for the conservation of marine mammals. It is home to breeding populations of endangered southern right whales, as well as significant breeding populations of southern elephant seals and South American sea lions. This regional context complements the information about wildlife watching at Punta Delgada without implying that the observation sites are the same.

Orca watching in the Biedma destination also has its own locations and time windows. At Punta Norte, orcas can be watched mainly in March and April, when they deliberately beach themselves to hunt sea lion pups. At Caleta Valdés, orcas can be watched seasonally in October and November, when southern elephant seal pups are present there. Both time windows partly overlap with the main period for watching elephant seals at Punta Delgada; however, the observations take place at the respective locations named. Check seasonal viewing opportunities before your trip.

Puerto Pirámides is the only urban center within the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés. Provincial Route No. 2 leads from National Route No. 3 into Península Valdés and provides access to Puerto Pirámides. For planning the trip to Punta Delgada, the separate gravel-road connection from Puerto Pirámides is the relevant route.
