When researching hotels in San Fernando Department, it is worth considering two distinct highlights: cultural attractions in the municipality of Resistencia and the Humedales Chaco wetlands, where Resistencia is located. This lets you decide whether art and urban history or the wetland landscape should play a greater part in your trip.

Landscape and Humedales Chaco

Resistencia lies within the protected Humedales Chaco Ramsar Site. The 508,000 ha area extends across the eastern part of the departments of San Fernando, 1º de Mayo, and Bermejo. It is therefore a regional point of reference for travelers who want to explore not only the cultural attractions in Resistencia but also the Chaco wetland landscape.

In the wider Chaco Húmedo, riverine forests and depressions with dense, free-floating vegetation are characteristic. Locally, such areas are known as “embalsados” and “camalotales.” The Ramsar Site also includes habitats of the Ciervo de los Pantanos (Blastoceros dichotomus), classified as endangered; the Lobito de río (Lutra longicaudis), classified as vulnerable; and the Lepidosirena, or “Lola” (Lepidosiren paradoxa), classified as rare.

Art and culture in Resistencia

More than 660 sculptures are spread across squares and sidewalks in Resistencia, forming an open-air museum. The MUSEUM, the Museo de las Esculturas Urbanas del Mundo, has a special connection to this collection: it hosts national and international sculpture biennials. Every two years, the Bienal Internacional de Escultura brings artists from around the world to Resistencia. It was established in 1988, organized by the Fundación Urunday and inspired by Fabriciano Gómez.

The city’s museums also offer different insights into the region. The Museo del Hombre Chaqueño “Profesor Ertivio Acosta” preserves the tangible and intangible heritage of the Qom, Moqoit, and Wichí Indigenous peoples, as well as Criollos and immigrants. It features permanent exhibitions on Chaco’s political history and has a space dedicated to Guaraní mythology. The Museo de Ciencias Naturales “Augusto Gustavo Schulz” is unique of its kind in Chaco Province; its facilities include permanent exhibition rooms and a specialist library.

Other cultural attractions include the Casa de las Culturas, a cultural and exhibition center, and the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes “René Brusau,” which preserves works across various disciplines by important artists from Chaco. The private association Fogón de los Arrieros preserves murals, paintings, prints, sculptures, and carvings. The Paseo de Artistas y Artesanos focuses on a fair showcasing local handicrafts.

Buildings and memorial sites add further context: the Iglesia Catedral was inaugurated in 1898 and houses the marble sculptures “La Inmaculada” and “San Fernando” by Fabriciano Gómez. The Casa por la Memoria del Chaco in Resistencia is a national historic site. At the Lugar de Desembarco de los Primeros Colonos, a monolith commemorates the arrival of the first group of immigrants in Chaco on February 2, 1878.

The city’s history also includes Estación Resistencia, part of the former Ferrocarril Santa Fe. It was originally the terminus of a narrow-gauge railway that reached Resistencia in 1907 and transported timber from the forests to industrial tanneries. This historical context complements visits to the city’s art and museums with a look at the railway’s former role.
