San Andrés De Giles Partido: Estancias, Countryside and History
Accommodation in San Andrés De Giles Partido
At Estancia La Merced, also known as Posta de Figueroa, Juan Manuel de Rosas wrote a document on December 20, 1834, known as the Carta de la Hacienda de Figueroa and addressed to Facundo Quiroga. The estate is located in San Andrés De Giles Partido and was designated a National Historic Monument on September 10, 2021.
Estancia La Merced and the History of the Hacienda
The Hacienda de Figueroa is considered an example of early agricultural settlements and of the architecture that developed in the Buenos Aires region during the Hispanic period. Its history can be explored through more than one famous name: a specific place, a historical document, and a regional building and settlement tradition offer different points of connection.
Rural Azcuénaga
Azcuénaga is a rural town in the partido, where the tranquility of country life, vibrant nature, and local history come together. Its cultural heritage is promoted through community-based tourism. Alongside the historical connections of the estancia, this brings the character of a rural town into focus.
The Capilla Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Azcuénaga is a church in the Neo-Romanesque style, inaugurated in 1907. Other places to visit in the town include the Estación de ferrocarril Azcuénaga railway station, Plaza Miguel Azcuénaga, Panadería La Moderna bakery, and Club Recreativo Apolo.
Roads through the Partido
The Ruta Nacional 7, Ruta Nacional 8, and Ruta Provincial 41 pass through the partido. Ruta Nacional 7 connects Buenos Aires with Mendoza; Ruta Nacional 8 connects Buenos Aires with Córdoba and the north of the country. Ruta Provincial 41 runs from Baradero to Ruta Nacional 2. These regional highways help with planning, while local access roads are key to reaching individual stops along the way.
Ruta 193 begins at Ruta Nacional 7 near the entrance to the city of San Andrés de Giles, continues to Zárate, and passes through Azcuénaga and Solís. The section between the city of San Andrés de Giles and Ruta 8 is unpaved. There are two routes to Azcuénaga: one follows Ruta Nacional 7 to the San Andrés de Giles or Carlos Keen exit, then continues through Villa Ruiz and along the old royal road; the other follows Ruta Nacional 8 near Solís. This second option includes an 800-meter unpaved stretch. Check road conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Festivals and Local Traditions
The second Fiesta del Salame más largo de Argentina took place in 2023 at Parque Municipal; the first edition had been held the previous year. The second edition featured artisans, producers, musicians, singers, and dancers. A cantina was run by the Asociación de Bomberos Voluntarios.
The ninth Fiesta de la Galleta de Campo was scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 11 a.m. at the railway station grounds in Azcuénaga. The announced program included the sale of Galleta de Campo, artistic performances, a fair featuring artisans and entrepreneurs, a food area, and canteen service. The two examples show different facets of local festival traditions: a program with many participating groups and performances, and a festival centered on a local baked good.
