Pilar: History, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Pilar
Historic Centre and Culture
The historic centre of Pilar is the main tourist and religious attraction in the Municipality of Pilar. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Pilar offers insight into the town’s architectural history: construction began in 1821, and the church features colonial characteristics and a single bell tower. This combination makes the church a tangible point of reference when exploring Pilar’s historic architecture.
Another focal point is the Espacio Museográfico ex Centro Cívico Municipal. It was built on parts of the original structures of the municipal building, which have been preserved and enhanced since the 19th century. The museum focuses on interpreting history and preserving the cultural and social heritage of the Partido de Pilar. While the Parroquia is associated with construction and architecture, the museum draws attention to history and community heritage.
The renovated municipal Ángel Alonso Theatre is located opposite the main square and is considered a gastronomic and cultural attraction.
Nature Around Pilar
Near Pilar lies the Reserva Natural del Pilar, a protected area known for its biodiversity and for preserving the native flora and fauna of the Province of Buenos Aires. This connection with nature offers a different perspective from the architecture and history of the town centre.
More to Explore in the Wider Pilar Partido
The wider destination of Pilar Partido offers further historical, religious and cultural perspectives. The Posta del Pinazo is a National Historic Site: in 1813, José de San Martín and his Grenadiers stopped there and changed horses before continuing their journey to San Lorenzo. The Lugar del Milagro is considered the first site of Catholic worship. Both places offer distinct historical and religious perspectives within the wider destination.
The Casco Histórico features historic buildings and monuments associated with Pilar’s origins and the formation of the Argentine nation. Another memorial site is the Cenotafio Malvinas: the museum complex includes a replica of the Darwin Cemetery and the Stella Maris Chapel, commemorating the heroes of the Malvinas War. In Argentina, the Cenotafio is considered unique of its kind.
The wider Pilar Partido also offers cultural activities. The Centro Cultural Federal offers workshops in music, visual arts, performing arts, dance and literature. If you would like to include a workshop in your travel plans, check the current programme before your trip. The Paseo del Centro enhances the historic centre, turns the main square in the heart of Pilar into a meeting place for everyone, and offers recreation, culture and gastronomy.
In the wider Pilar Partido, the Reserva Natural Municipal del Pilar covers almost 300 hectares. It preserves and restores the Talar, Pastizal, Bosque Ribereño and Pajonal ecosystems characteristic of this region of the Province of Buenos Aires; the Pajonal is located in the wetland.
