Cañuelas Partido: Estancias, Culture and Polo
Accommodation in Cañuelas Partido
Travel interests in Cañuelas Partido range from historic architecture and rural production to art and polo. Uribelarrea offers concrete points of interest: its historic town center, Creole cuisine with regional flavors, and places with an agricultural history. Estancias, an art venue and a polo club add further perspectives on these themes.
Uribelarrea: Square, Church and Industrial History
Plaza Centenario is in the historic center of Uribelarrea. Its octagonal layout is based on a design by Pedro Benoit; the diagonals converge in the center. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Luján can be seen from the plaza. The Neo-Gothic sanctuary stands opposite the square and was inaugurated on December 18, 1890.
Buildings connected with rural and industrial history are also part of the townscape. The Museo de Máquinas y Herramientas Leopoldo Rizzi is housed in the former shed of the railway station, built in 1892. Its exhibits explore the history of rural labor and agricultural production in the partido. El Castillo, the former Finaco factory in Uribelarrea, is an example of local industrial architecture from the 1930s. The Escuela Agrotécnica Don Bosco in Uribelarrea is historically regarded as the first agricultural school in Argentina and Latin America.
Uribelarrea’s Creole cuisine is based on regional flavors and is a feature of a number of old pulperías, shops, eateries from an earlier era, and houses. Visitors interested in local food culture and historic buildings can explore these different aspects of the town side by side.
Estancias and Agriculture
The main building of Estancia San Martín de Vicente Casares stands at kilometer 50.5 of Provincial Route No. 205 in Cañuelas Partido and is protected as a National Historic Monument. The site is also connected with an important chapter in agricultural history: in 1871, Argentina’s first wheat export to Europe was shipped from the estancia.
The historic main building of Estancia La Caledonia comprises two interconnected houses and another dwelling, which probably dates from Arnold’s time. Other features include the old jagüel (water well) and a dovecote. The production area consists of three sheds, utility rooms and a work area. Its division into residential and production areas makes the estancia an interesting architectural ensemble.
At Cabaña Valle de Goñi in Uribelarrea, visitors can learn about the enclosure and goat farming, pet and feed the goats, and sample products from the six-hectare property, including goat’s-milk dulce de leche. A municipal visitor description from 2022 mentions these offerings; check their current availability before visiting.
Art, Polo and Community Life
Campo Cultura Cañuelas offers participatory tours of its sculptures and art spaces. The 35-hectare site is surrounded by nature. The focus is on art and the design of an expansive property, rather than on a single historic building.
La Dolfina Polo Club in Cañuelas is a high-performance polo center for experienced players and beginners with a low handicap who want to improve their game. Every November, during the peak of the Argentine polo season, the club welcomes players from around the world for various tournaments. Exact dates may change, so check the current event schedule before traveling.
The Feria Rural de Cañuelas is another focal point of local community life. A municipal report dated May 11, 2026, confirmed that the fair is still running and is the oldest and longest-running of Cañuelas’s fairs. It recognizes the work of local producers, entrepreneurs, craftspeople and artists, and is regarded as an important gathering place for the local community.
