For a trip to Río Luján, trails through the wetland and barranca forest offer different perspectives on the landscape. There is also a five-kilometer cycling route, a greenhouse classroom and the EcoFeria in Parque Nacional Ciervo de los Pantanos. When planning, you can distinguish between activities by their landscape, time required and seasonal dates.

Trails to the wetland and viewpoints

Sendero Historias del Pastizal is 1,000 meters long and takes one hour with a guide or 20 minutes to walk independently; its difficulty level is low. Along the way, it passes through a representation of the Pampa grassland landscape and cultural features of the former Estancia Otamendi. At the end is a viewpoint with panoramic views over the wetland and Laguna Grande. For planning purposes, you can choose between a one-hour guided tour and the shorter self-guided option.

Sendero Guardianes de la Barranca crosses the barranca forest and leads to another viewpoint offering a different perspective on the wetland. The two trails highlight different landscapes: Historias del Pastizal features a representation of the Pampa grassland landscape and cultural features along the trail, while the barranca forest shapes the route of Guardianes. This gives you a choice between views over Laguna Grande and another viewpoint in a different setting.

Cycling route and insights into native plants

Sendero Recuperando lo Nuestro leads to Vivero de Plantas Nativas Don Juan. The 2,000-square-meter site includes a greenhouse classroom. There, you can learn about the cultivation and production of native species from the Río de la Plata region and the national park. This trail focuses on plant cultivation: a visit to the site connects the trail’s name with practical insights into native species and their production.

Camino Islas Malvinas offers another way to cross the wetland. The five-kilometer route can be traveled by bicycle and connects Estación Rómulo Otamendi with the Costa del Paraná landing. Along the way, it passes through the wetland, where you can observe the wildlife that lives there. Its length, suitability for cycling and two endpoints give this route a different character from the trails leading to the viewpoints.

Parque Nacional Ciervo de los Pantanos preserves 2,500 hectares of the Delta e Islas del Paraná, Pampa and Espinal ecoregions, as well as internationally significant wetlands. This park-wide perspective complements the individual trail routes: the landscapes featured include the Pampa grassland and barranca forest, while the cycling route passes through the wetland.

EcoFeria and horseback riding

The EcoFeria de Productores locales in Parque Nacional Ciervo de los Pantanos offers handcrafted and sustainable products every second weekend of the month and on long weekends from March through December. Check the specific dates before your trip if you would like to plan a visit to the fair.

In the surrounding area, you can book horseback rides with local residents in the communities of Otamendi and Río Luján and take excursions around the protected area. Confirm local availability in advance if you would like to include a horseback ride in your travel plans.
