Sierra Leone: Rainforest, Wildlife and Islands
Accommodation in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone offers a range of travel experiences: cultural and historical sites in Freetown sit alongside protected areas, rainforest, river landscapes and islands. As you plan your trip, you can consider each destination according to its particular highlights. In Freetown, the focus is on culture and history, while the natural areas and islands reveal other sides of the country.
Culture and history in Freetown
The Sierra Leone National Museum is located in the centre of Freetown, beneath the branches of the Cotton Tree. It is a hub for many cultural activities; the visitor programme may vary. The museum gives your trip planning a specific cultural point of reference in the capital. Historic sights in Freetown also include the old Fourah Bay College, where lectures and exams were held until the 1990s. The two places represent different aspects of a visit focused on culture and history.
The hiking trails at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary also offer a different way to spend time outdoors. The tours last between 1.5 and 3 hours and pass through local Krio villages, as well as viewpoints, waterfalls and dams. The duration helps you gauge the scope of a hike. Trail availability and conditions may change; check local conditions before your visit.
Rainforest and wildlife
Tiwai Island is a wildlife sanctuary and a community-run tourism site in southeastern Sierra Leone. The Gola-Tiwai Complex comprises four component areas in two protected areas: Gola Rainforest National Park and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Eastern and Southern Provinces. Most of the complex consists of primary, wet or semi-evergreen tropical rainforest that has never been commercially exploited.
Birdlife is another notable natural feature of the Gola-Tiwai Complex: it includes up to 448 species, among them the White-breasted Guineafowl, Timneh Parrot and White-necked Rockfowl. This is an upper limit, not a claim that every species can be seen on a single visit. Those interested in rainforest and birds will find a different focus here than among Freetown’s cultural sights.
River trip in Outamba-Kilimi National Park
Outamba-Kilimi National Park lies in northern Sierra Leone. It was designated in 1995 and consists of two separate areas: Outamba covers 74,100 hectares and Kilimi 36,800 hectares, with a 20-kilometre-wide corridor between them. This layout is as useful for orientation as the size of the two areas.
In the park, visitors can take a canoe trip on the Kabba River and watch birds, monkeys along the riverbank and hippos. This combines a nature experience with a specific activity on the river. If you plan to take this trip, check local operating conditions before travelling.
Islands and coastal landscapes
The Banana Islands archipelago consists of Dublin, Ricketts and Mes-Meheux. Dublin and Ricketts are connected by a stone causeway. On Dublin, visitors can relax at Big Sand Beach, snorkel, dive, and rent kayaks or pedal boats to explore the bays. The activities and rental options listed apply to Dublin; confirm their local availability before your visit.
Mes-Meheux differs in its access requirements: the island is uninhabited and privately owned, and can only be visited as part of an organised tour. As access arrangements may change, confirm the possibility of a visit with a tour operator in advance. This allows you to take Mes-Meheux’s specific access requirement into account when choosing between the islands, without applying it to Dublin or Ricketts.
Another coastal landscape is River No. 2 Beach, near the mouth of the River No. 2. Palm trees and mangroves surround the beach. This scenery differs from the island activities on Dublin and the inland rainforest areas, and can help you choose destinations based on your interests.
