The stone Epiphany Church in Khopylyovo was built in 1701 as the cathedral of the Epiphany Ostrovsky Monastery for Men. The monastery was founded between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Fyodor Ushakov was baptized in the church in the winter of 1745; he later became an admiral in the Russian Navy and a holy righteous warrior. This history connects a specific place with a significant figure in Russian naval history.

Churches and Architectural History

Arefino also offers a glimpse of different church architectural styles. The stone Church of the Nativity of Christ was built in 1789 on the site of the dilapidated wooden Church of St. Demetrius. Its Neoclassical domed rotunda stands alongside the traditional five-domed design. The Church of the Prophet Elijah was added as a winter church in 1843 and is considered an example of the provincial Empire style. Those interested in architectural history will find different periods and forms here: from an 18th-century building to the regionally influenced Empire style of the 19th century.

The Epiphany Church in Khopylyovo is also associated with a living religious tradition. A monastic community is based at its episcopal residence, where services are held daily. The village of Khopylyovo also hosts an annual festival in honor of Fyodor Ushakov. If you would like to attend a service, check the current arrangements for visitors locally. For the festival, it is advisable to check the latest event details before your trip.

Village Life, Estate and Landscape Park

At the “Derevnya Tygydym” ethnopark, visitors can enter and experience a village designed to portray village life in the 19th century. The focus is therefore on an immersive recreation of a way of life, while the churches highlight architectural history and religious tradition. This gives you different ways to explore the district’s past as you plan your trip.

The “Tikhmenevs – Family and Estate” route includes a guided tour of the Tikhmenev noble estate ensemble and its grounds, including the landscape park. The park is included on the list of specially protected natural areas. Both the architectural ensemble and the park are therefore part of this excursion. As the tour’s availability and arrangements need to be confirmed, contact the district tourism center in advance.

Events and Trip Planning

Cycling is also featured among the events: the Demino Ski Center lists a cross-country cycling marathon in its events program. Check the center’s current event calendar before making plans. The offerings thus differ in character: the churches and their architectural styles can be viewed in historical context, the ethnopark presents a designed vision of village life, and the estate route combines a guided tour with the landscape park; the cycling marathon adds a sporting event held on specific dates.

When choosing a hotel in Rybinsky District, you can start by considering the themes that interest you on your trip. Check the dates for the festival, estate tour and marathon before traveling; ask locally about arrangements for attending services.
