Breytovsky District can be explored through two very different aspects: the village history of Breytovo and designated natural monuments with clearly specified areas. At the Breytovsky Local History Museum, local and regional history meet a topic devoted to crafts and the linen trade. An excursion connects the village’s history with a walk along the promenade on the Rybinsk Reservoir. It also recalls churches that were destroyed during the construction of the reservoir. Those planning a trip focused on culture and nature will find several distinct points of interest here.

Linen Craft and History at the Local History Museum

One hall of the Breytovsky Local History Museum is devoted to crafts and the linen trade. The exhibits include a loom, numerous spinning wheels, shuttles, flax fibers, embroidered cloths and shirts. The collection ranges from raw flax through spinning and weaving tools to finished textiles. This makes it possible to explore different aspects of linen craft together through materials, tools and textiles. The museum’s exhibitions also tell the story of the Breytovsky area and the village of Breytovo.

Visitor offerings include exhibitions, workshops, museum programs and guided tours for adults and children. On guided tours of Breytovo, participants learn about the village’s past and present history. An excursion on this theme includes a walk along the promenade on the Rybinsk Reservoir and a visit to a monument to the first tractor. The excursion thus combines local history, a waterside route and a monument. If you plan to take this excursion, check the current dates with the organizer.

Church History in Breytovo

Before the area was flooded by the Rybinsk Sea, Breytovo had two churches: the Church of St. John the Baptist, built in 1767, and the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, built in 1887. Both were destroyed during the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir. The construction dates mark two different points in the village’s history; their destruction during the reservoir construction was a later turning point. The history of the churches can therefore also be viewed as part of the changes associated with the construction of the reservoir.

Natural Monuments with Different Areas

Three natural monuments of regional importance give the landscape another clearly defined focus. The Prozorovsky Pine Forest in Breytovsky District is one of these natural monuments and covers 67.1675 hectares. The pine forest on Parkovaya Street is also among them and covers 13.3389 hectares. The birch grove is located in the village of Breytovo and covers 0.502 hectares. By area, the Prozorovsky Pine Forest is the largest, followed by the pine forest on Parkovaya Street; the birch grove is the smallest of the three. The names refer to different landmarks: a district, a street and the village of Breytovo.

There is a sailing area on the northeastern shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo; visitors are advised to check local conditions before traveling. The Rybinsk Museum Reserve is housed in the New Grain Exchange building, erected in 1912 on the high bank of the Volga to a design by Moscow architect A. V. Ivanov.
