In Boguchansky District, protected steppe areas are the focus for nature lovers. Near Krinitsa are several named sites whose features range from saline soils and semi-desert plant communities to protected steppe slopes. Together, they do not form a single uniform landscape, but rather showcase different facets of local nature. The wider Voronezh Oblast also offers other nature and culture themes that may play a role when planning a stay.

Steppes and protected areas near Krinitsa

The Shlepchino natural area near Krinitsa covers 200 hectares and was designated a natural monument on January 21, 1969. It protects a Lessing's feather grass steppe with semi-desert plant communities on saline soils, as well as Schrenck's tulip. Shlepchino is also an example of relict vegetation from the semi-desert zone in the southeast of Voronezh Oblast. Its specific connection to the soil and plant life makes the area an illustrative nature destination for a trip focused on landscapes and conservation.

The Berestovoe natural area near Krinitsa has a different focus: it protects steppe slopes where snakehead tulips and Schrenck's tulips grow. Schrenck's tulip is therefore mentioned in descriptions of both natural areas; Berestovoe adds protected slopes and another named tulip species to the picture. Pomelovskaya Balka is also near Krinitsa and covers eight hectares. Compared with Shlepchino's 200 hectares, this figure shows how much the areas of these named landscapes can vary in size.

The Khrypun Steppe is described as the last untouched landscape of mixed-grass, fescue and feather grass steppe in the Central Black Earth Region. Here, the steppe as a landscape type takes center stage, while Shlepchino is characterized particularly by its semi-desert plant communities and Berestovoe by its protected slopes. Visitors interested in nature can take these different features into account when choosing a destination.

More nature and cultural experiences in Voronezh Oblast

The wider destination of Voronezh Oblast is also home to the offerings of the Khopyor Nature Reserve. The “Legendy Khopra” hiking excursion is five kilometers long and takes three hours; this route is closed during the spring flood. The “Tur de Khopyor” cycling tour is 26 kilometers long and takes four hours. By comparison, it is 21 kilometers longer and takes one hour more than the hiking excursion. The closure during the spring flood applies to the hiking route mentioned above. The reserve's natural history museum covers the reserve's wildlife and habitats in two halls. Exhibition topics include beavers, Russian desmans, aquatic and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, elk, fallow deer and red deer; there is also a large relief map. Check the museum's visitor regulations before your trip.

The chalk landscapes of the “Divnogorye” Museum-Reserve offer another distinctive natural feature in Voronezh Oblast. The area is known for bizarre chalk cliffs on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorsky Canyon is about one kilometer long and up to 200 meters wide. The reserve also includes six sacred caves and cave complexes carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, extending for about 8.5 kilometers. These chalk landscapes are markedly different from the steppe areas in Boguchansky District.

The “Kostenki” Museum-Reserve in Voronezh Oblast offers a cultural and archaeological focus. Its archaeology museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The reserve also includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Paleolithic sites; the museum-reserve covers nine hectares. The range of themes in the region thus extends from steppes and nature conservation to chalk landscapes and archaeological sites. Boguchansky District can be distinguished in particular by its named steppe areas and their varied plant and landscape features.
