Yasnogorsky District: Manor House, Hillfort and Baking Tradition
Accommodation in Yasnogorsky District
Two very different layers of time and culture come together in Yasnogorsky District: in Fedorovka stands the former manor house of Glikeria Nikolayevna Fedotova, an actress at the Imperial Moscow Theatre; on the Oka lies the early Iron Age hillfort of «Strelitsa». At the Fedyashevo estate, a bakery featuring traditional recipes from Tula Governorate adds its own distinctive touch. The range of themes thus extends from architecture and park design to archaeology and the history of baking, each with its own location and historical context.
Manor House and Hillfort: Two Historical Perspectives
The historic house in Fedorovka has two storeys and a mezzanine. The estate includes a park with avenues of lime and larch trees, a reflective pond and a garden. The house and grounds reveal different aspects of the former estate: here the focus is on the architecture, while avenues, pond and garden define the park and garden landscape.
The early Iron Age hillfort of «Strelitsa» offers a much earlier perspective. It lies on the high right bank of the Oka, between two ravines near the mouth of the Strelitsa River and on the grounds of a holiday camp. The site is 0.5 km west of Makarovka and 1.5 km northwest of Fedorovka. The historical themes thus differ not only in period: the manor foregrounds the house and park, while the hillfort is notable for its early date and riverside location.
Baking Traditions and Hands-On Activities in Fedyashevo
At the Fedyashevo estate, «Pekarnya Fedyashevo» makes bread and baked goods using traditional recipes from Tula Governorate. The recipe tradition spans the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It includes recipes from the Filippov baking dynasty and the family of M. A. Gartung. The time span and family names give the culinary theme a specific context: the focus is on particular historical baking recipes and their origins. The bakery began operating in May 2025; check current availability with the operator.
The Fedyashevo estate also offers interactive tours of the estate and bakery, with tastings. There are also workshops on making katelki, rye gingerbread and «Filippovskie bulochki». The activities have different focuses: the tours bring the estate and bakery together with a tasting, while the workshops are devoted to the named baked goods and how to make them. Before your trip, check with the operator to find out when tours and workshops are currently available.
Culture in the wider destination of Tula Oblast
The wider destination of Tula Oblast offers other cultural experiences. At the «Tulskie drevnosti» museum, the exhibition «Skazanie o Mamaevom poboishche» explores the Battle of Kulikovo Field. In interactive areas, visitors can weave a piece of chain mail, try on armor and learn to read miniature illustrations in chronicles. The exhibition «Sekrety tulskikh masterov» features a pottery workshop, a blacksmith's workshop and household objects from the 17th to the 19th centuries. One exhibition combines the history of the battle with hands-on activities; the other focuses on crafts and historical household objects.
