Discover Pyatigorsk: Lermontov, mineral springs and Mount Mashuk
Accommodation in Pyatigorsk
Lermontov’s legacy, spa traditions and mountain scenery reveal different sides of Pyatigorsk. Tsvetnik Park brings together several distinctive cultural sites; Mount Mashuk is home to viewpoints and Proval, an underground lake.
Cultural sites and Lermontov’s legacy
Tsvetnik Park is the city’s oldest park and a popular place for residents and visitors to stroll. The Lermontov Gallery adorns the park and has become one of Pyatigorsk’s symbols. City exhibitions, festivals and concerts are often held here; event dates may vary. The gallery also hosts concerts, art exhibitions and themed events, with a changing program.
In the southern part of Tsvetnik is the cool, shady Diana Grotto, one of Pyatigorsk’s best-known and oldest attractions. Giuseppe Bernardazzi designed it in the spring of 1830; it was built in the summer of 1831 and completed that autumn. On July 8, 1841, Mikhail Lermontov held a “country ball” for ladies in front of the grotto. It was decorated with greenery, carpets and colorful lanterns for the occasion.
Poetry festivals are held annually at the foot of the Lermontov monument. The monument is described as the city’s most visited. The Lermontov House regularly offers guided tours and lectures, as well as exhibitions and presentations about the poet’s life and work; check the current schedule for dates. In 1973, the house was transformed into the M. Yu. Lermontov State Museum-Reserve. The museum has the status of a historical monument of federal significance.
Another place of historical interest is the Pyatigorsk Museum of Local History. Founded in 1903 as the Museum of the Caucasian Mountain Society, it is one of the region’s oldest museums. The exhibition “Pages of the History of Pyatigorye” includes archaeological finds from various periods, edged and firearms from the 18th to the early 20th century, materials on the city’s history, historical household items and maps. The current exhibition may change.
The Besedka Eola, also known as Eolova Arfa, was built in 1831; its pavilion has become a recognizable symbol of the resort. Locals and tourists visit Eolova Arfa every day to enjoy the view. The Academic Gallery is described as Pyatigorsk’s “stone crown.” Its left wing houses an insect museum with native and exotic butterflies, as well as live snakes, owls and chameleons. Check before visiting whether the exhibition is currently open.
Mount Mashuk, viewpoints and Proval
Mount Mashuk is a 993-meter-high igneous mountain, but it is not a volcano. It is designated a natural monument and has the status of a historical and cultural protected area. In good weather, its summit offers views of the Caucasus Range, with Elbrus as its highest peak. The Sun Gates, also called the Gates of Love, frame views of Pyatigorsk, Mount Beshtau, Yutsa and Dzhutsa; on a clear day, Elbrus can also be seen in the distance.
Proval is an underground lake on the southeastern slope of Mount Mashuk, reached through a long tunnel. Its high sulfur content gives the lake its turquoise color; the cave smells of hydrogen sulfide. The area in front of the tunnel entrance is paved and furnished with benches. An audio guide shares the lake’s history and reads excerpts from well-known novels; check availability on site.
A 10-kilometer ring road runs along the foot of Mount Mashuk and passes the site of M. Yu. Lermontov’s duel, the Perkalsky Arboretum, Komsomolskaya Glade, Proval, Eolova Arfa and the Sun Gates. Check current route conditions before planning. This lets you connect the sequence of named stops with the viewpoints and cultural sites without confusing the individual locations.
Spa traditions and trails
The spa’s history dates back at least to the discovery of its first healing spring: Dr. Haas found it in Pyatigorsk in 1810. In the spa area, mineral water is dispensed at two drinking galleries and eight springs, located close to the sanatoriums. As operating conditions may change, check local details before visiting.
There are three main terrenkur routes in Pyatigorsk. They differ in the prescribed level of physical exertion for people with illnesses. The comparison of the routes therefore focuses on a specific feature highlighted in their descriptions.
