The Dnieper rises about two kilometers southwest of the village of Dudkino in Sychyovsky District, Smolensk Oblast. The source gives the district a distinctive geographical landmark. Several themes come together here: the religious dedication of the buildings, annual celebrations, and a memorial to the fighting of 1941.

Buildings, Celebrations, and History at the Source

In 2010, a church, a chapel above the source, and a bell tower were built at the source of the Dnieper. The church is dedicated to Saint Prince Vladimir the Great, Equal to the Apostles. Together, the three buildings form a cultural focal point at the source; the chapel is specifically positioned above the spring.

Celebrations marking the Baptism of Rus take place here every year on July 28. The date anchors a recurring tradition at the site. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the program for the year you plan to visit. Another historical layer reaches back to the autumn of 1941: at that time, the 119th Krasnoyarsk Rifle Division fought at the source of the Dnieper. A memorial plaque at the site commemorates the Krasnoyarsk soldiers. The celebrations marking the Baptism of Rus and the remembrance of the wartime events are two distinct historical connections to the same place.

Local History Museum in Sychevka

Another specific cultural point of interest in the district is the Sychyovsky Local History Museum. You will find it at 3 Bolshaya-Proletarskaya Street in Sychevka, the district’s administrative center. The source near Dudkino and the museum in Sychevka are different destinations within Sychyovsky District: one is the source of the Dnieper with its memorial sites, the other an institution devoted to local history. Together, they give the trip an urban dimension as well as a connection to the source, without implying that the two places are the same.

More to Explore in Smolensk Oblast

Beyond Sychyovsky District, the wider Smolensk Oblast offers other distinct themes for a trip, including archaeological heritage, a historical museum reserve, and routes through natural areas.

The Gnezdovo archaeological complex preserves about 2,500 burial mounds and a settlement. It is the largest complex of archaeological monuments in Russia and Europe from the period when the Old Russian state was emerging. As an archaeological monument of state, or federal, significance, it is under state protection. The surviving graves and the settlement illustrate two different aspects of the complex: its visible archaeological remains and its place in the early history of the Old Russian state.

The A. S. Griboyedov Khmelita State Historical, Cultural, and Natural Museum Reserve is also located in Smolensk Oblast, in Vyazemsky District. The Khmelita estate has been owned by the Griboyedov family since 1680 and is the centerpiece of the museum reserve. The historical connection between the estate and the family gives this destination a different focus from the archaeological traces at Gnezdovo.

Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park was established on April 15, 1992, in the territory of Demidovsky and Dukhovshchinsky districts. Its purpose is to protect unique natural complexes for recreation, education, science, and cultural activities. One example of a trail there is the “K istokam” eco-trail: the circular route begins in the village of Stary Dvor. A track for mobile apps such as Geotreker or MAPS.ME helps visitors walk it independently. Two viewpoints were set up at Lakes Svyatets and Sapsho in 2023–2024.

Another nature experience in Smolensk Oblast is the barefoot trail in Boroviki. It consists of 14 sections, each six meters long, with different natural surfaces; visitors walk them barefoot. At the end, you can wash your feet and, if you wish, take a walk through Aptekarskiy Sad. The trail combines the direct experience of different ground materials with an optional visit to the garden afterward.
