On the banks of the Lena in the central part of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), the rock pillars of Lena Pillars Nature Park rise to about 100 m. Deep, steep gorges separate the rock bastions; they were formed by frost weathering along fissures. The nature park also contains significant evidence of events associated with the Cambrian explosion, a turning point in the development of life on Earth.

Landscape and Geological History

The 115 km-long Great Cambrian Route, which runs along the left bank of the Lena, offers another geological perspective and provides information on the development of the Earth's crust from the Lower Cambrian onward. Its focus differs from the evidence at the nature park: the route covers the development of the Earth's crust, while Lena Pillars is associated with events linked to the Cambrian explosion.

The Diring-Yuryakh archaeological site is also located in Lena Pillars National Park. Yuri Mochanov and Svetlana Fedoseyeva discovered it in 1984; the site is accessible only in summer. Another landscape feature in the national park is Saamys-Kumaga, a relatively small but typical tukulan.

Trails and Seasonal Experiences

In the Labydya recreation zone below the Lena Pillars, a 2 km ecological trail leads to a viewing platform. It is open from winter through summer. Visitors can also take part in the Algys blessing ritual in the Labydya tourism zone; check visit arrangements with the park in advance.

For winter travel to Labydya, take Republic Road R-004 “Umnas” to Batamay, then continue along an additional 5 km winter road that is specially prepared. Conditions and operation are seasonal; check the current situation before setting out. The Lena Pillars can also be reached from Yakutsk by water transport on the Lena, including cruises and private operators. This transport is seasonal, so it is advisable to check current availability.

The Buotama bison nursery of the same name is located at the mouth of the Buotama. Check current visit arrangements directly with the park before visiting. Rafting trips take place on the Buotama in summer; check current arrangements for these as well before your trip.

Museums in Yakutsk

Yakutsk, the republic's capital, is home to the northernmost museum of the Bank of Russia. It displays unusual forms of money and money substitutes that circulated in Yakutia from 1921 to 2003. Visitors can use calculating machines and learn how banknote authenticity is determined. A guided tour must be booked in advance to visit.

The Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk offers a different subject. Its osteological collection comprises 1,450 objects, including bone remains of representatives of the mammoth fauna of northeastern Siberia, as well as unique mammal fossils with soft tissue. For information on which items are currently on display, it is best to contact the museum directly. In Yakutsk, visitors can therefore choose between different interests: monetary history and banknote authentication on the one hand, and mammoth fauna and fossils on the other.

Nature Parks and Ice Landscapes

Kolyma Nature Park is located in Srednekolymsky Ulus. Momsky Nature Park is a center for ecotourism and scientific research. Its landmarks include the Ulakhan Taryn Great Momsky Ice Field, Mount Pobeda, the Balagan-Taas volcanic dome and Marble Mountain.

Another seasonal activity in the republic is the “Rafting on the Siver River” tour. It includes a trip in inflatable boats and is offered seasonally; check current arrangements before setting out. Buluus is a landscape and hydrological nature reserve of republican significance. In some places, the Buluus ice field reaches a thickness of three meters. In summer, the glacier partly thaws, forming hollows that resemble caves and crevices.

Museums in Yakutsk, the Lena Pillars area and other nature experiences appeal to different interests; seasonal routes and activities should also be factored into your plans.
